MONTEZUMA - Collins-Maxwell won the girls’ race, and placed second in the boys’ competition at the Montezuma Invitational cross country meet Oct. 5 at Montezuma.

The Spartan girls scored 54 points to beat Colfax-Mingo by 20 points for first out of four scored teams. Collins-Maxwell had three runners place in the top 10 and six in the top 25.

“We are so happy for this group of girls!” Collins-Maxwell head cross country coach Jerry Meinerts said. “They have worked so hard this year and it’s great to see them have some success. We’ve overcome some little injuries and are now finally getting everyone healthy and back in shape.”

Mikayla Houge placed seventh, Olivia Pasquariello eighth and Abby Husak ninth as the top runners for the Spartan girls. Houge ran a 5-kilometer time of 24 minutes, 32 seconds, Pasquariello 24:53 and Husak 24:57.

Shasta Moody and Whitney Spencer clocked in at 26:08 and 26:23 to place 20th and 21st respectively to complete the scoring for the Spartans. Morgan Day was close behind the scoring group with a 23rd-place time of 26:41.

“We were trying to run as a pack tonight and we actually ended up with two packs that really worked well together tonight,” Meinerts said. “Mikayla, Olivia, and Abby ran great races tonight and really led that top pack and finished in the top 10. Then Shasta, Whitney, and Morgan ran within almost 30 seconds of each other.”

Tori Bienfang ran varsity as well, finishing 36th in 28:13.

In the boys’ race, Collins-Maxwell scored 69 points to edge Montezuma by four points for second out of six scored teams. Pella Christian won with 47 points.

“This was a tough one for us tonight,” Meinerts said. “We had some high expectations going in and fell short. Pella Christian had beaten us twice this year and we knew it would be tough, but we thought we could run with them. We made some mistakes throughout the race tonight that we need to learn from, move on, and become better for our next race.”

Carter Fricke ran a 5-kilometer time of 20:05 to place eighth and Max Van Maanen crossed the finish line in 20:21 to finish 11th as the top runners for the Spartan boys. Frank Sposeto IV took 13th in 20:41, Jacob Pierick 17th in 21:02 and Noah Rhoades 20th in 21:18 to complete the scoring for the Spartan boys.

Carter Davis ran a 22:40 to end up 27th and Carter Merryman was 44th in 24:19 as the other varsity runners for Collins-Maxwell.
