KNOXVILLE - Overtime hasn’t been kind to the North Polk football team.

For the third time this season, the Comets were dealt a gut-wrenching setback in overtime Friday as they suffered a 36-29 loss at the hands of Knoxville in Class 3A District 6 play.

North Polk took a 29-21 lead with five minutes, 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Mason Russell scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 10-yard run and added the 2-point conversion run. But Knoxville answered right back as Jacob Zuck found Rylan Cox on a 10-yard touchdown strike with just 1:42 remaining.

Needing a 2-point conversion to tie, Hunter Ohannessian ran the ball in across the goal line to even the score.

The Comets were unable to answer in regulation to put the game into overtime. Knoxville got the ball first in the extra session and Ohannessian ran the ball in from 11 yards out to put his team on top.

On the ensuing drive, North Polk’s attempt to keep the game going was dashed when Cox came up with an interception for the Panthers to end the game.

North Polk fell despite outgaining Knoxville 330-296 in total yards and forcing three turnovers. The loss put the Comets at 2-5 overall and 1-4 in 3A District 6.

Russell was phenomenal in a losing effort. He carried the ball a whopping 45 times and ran for 276 yards.

Logan Engebretson completed 5 of 7 passes for 52 yards, Sommers intercepted two passes and made one catch for 29 yards and Caleb Lomica finished with 11.5 tackles and a fumble recovery for the Comets. Sully Hartsook added 5.5 tackles, Ryan Fausch had three grabs for 17 yards and Tyler McCloud chipped in 4.5 tackles.

Knoxville improved to 3-4 and 1-4 respectively. Zuck threw for 93 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 127 and one score, Cox made three grabs for 41 yards and two touchdowns, Ohannessian ran for 57 yards, Joe Hollinrake caught two passes for 52 yards and Titius Chapman made 9.5 tackles for the Panthers.

Up next for North Polk is a home game against three-time defending 3A state champion Pella (6-1, 5-0). The game takes place at 7:30 p.m. this Friday in Alleman.
