DES MOINES - North Polk and Ballard dominated the girls’ race and the Comet boys won a team championship at the Saydel Invitational Oct. 5 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.


North Polk edged Ballard by one point — 28 to 29 — for the girls’ team championship in a battle between two top-seven Class 3A teams. Running varsity and JV combined, the two teams combined to produce the top 15 individual performances and 25 of the top 26 in an amazing display of dominance.


North Polk — the No. 4 team in 3A — had the Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 12, 13 and 14 runners individually at meet.


Amelia Lesher — ranked No. 17 in 3A — won in 19 minutes, 38.70 seconds. Emily Patterson came in fourth at 20:35.32, Sophie Blanchard took fifth in 20:41.21, Kennedy Wendel placed sixth in 20:50.65 and Abi Zimmer finished 12th in 21:35.75 as the scored runners for North Polk.


Jessica Weis placed 13th in 21:38.95 and Addie Cooper 14th in 21:48.40 to round out the varsity competition for North Polk at the meet.


Ballard ended up with the Nos. 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 runners in the girls’ race.


Ellie Twedt — rated 15th in 3A — was runner-up behind Lesher with a time of 20:01.00. Caitlin Maher was close behind Twedt with a third-place effort of 20:11.66.


Lauren Matthews came in seventh at 21:04.98, Rachel Wohlgemuth eighth in 21:06.49 and Summer McVicker ninth with a 21:07.46 showing as the other runners to to earn points for the Bombers.


Hailey Cole and Abby Ross also ran varsity for Ballard. Cole clocked in at 21:09.50 to place 10th and Ross finished 11th in 21:29.11.


North Polk won the boys’ race with 51 points. The Comets just edged out Des Moines Lincoln by three points for the win and Ballard took third out of nine scored teams with 60 points.


Jacob Wilcox ran a 5-kilometer time of 17:14.17 to place second overall for the North Polk boys. Des Moines Lincoln’s Andrew Klein won in 16:40.01.


Will McCormick ran a time of 18 minutes flat to place fifth for the Comets. Flint Vernon came in ninth at 18:16.02, Sam Carstensen 14th in 18:37.50 and Gabe Drake 21st in 19:05.37 to round out the Comet scoring.


Michael Williams took 25th in 19:25.91 and Noah Church placed 27th in 19:31.26 to finish off the varsity competition for North Polk.


Jace Beall led Ballard with a sixth-place time of 18:04.70. Zane Charter ended up 10th in 18:18.67.


Chase Winterboer came in 12th with a time of 18:32.40, Carter Thompson 13th in 18:34.59 and Gage Long 19th in 18:53.04 as the other runners to score for Ballard. Owen Zunkel took 26th in 19:27.61 and Seth Wohlgemuth 30th in 19:32.73 as the other Bomber varsity competitors.
