WINTERSET - The Ballard girls put on a show at the Raccoon River Conference cross country meet Monday at the Lakeview Country Club in Winterset.
The Bomber girls, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, won the conference title with ease. Ballard ended up with 25 points to beat Winterset by 60 points for the conference title.
“We experimented a bit with this meet since we felt pretty confident,” Ballard head cross country coach Scott Barth said. “We attacked the first 400 meters and then tried to pack up our girls and to separate ourselves from most of the competition. We did a nice job and are on the right track going into the 10 days heading into regional. We are as healthy as we have been all season and will work hard heading forward and rest legs before the qualifier (meet).”
All seven Ballard runners were named all-conference by placing in the top 12.
Ellie Twedt, ranked 15th individually in 3A, placed second overall for the Ballard girls with a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 34.91 seconds. Carlisle’s Megan Sievers, the No. 5 runner in 3A, won the individual title 19:24.17.
Freshman Caitlin Maher took fourth overall with an impressive 20:47.62 showing and Lauren Matthews was right behind in fifth place after clocking in at 20:59.49. Hailey Cole came in sixth at 21:08.23 and Summer McVicker took eighth in 21:14.79 to complete the Bomber scoring.
Rachel Wohlgemuth and Josie Fleischmann also made all-RRC, despite coming up short of scoring points for the team. Wohlgemuth finished ninth in 21:16.80 and Fleischmann came in 11th at 21:47.33.
On the boys’ side, Ballard scored 112 points to place fourth out of seven teams. Carlisle won the boys’ title with 33 points and Bondurant-Farrar came in second with a score of 54.
“We are developing as a team and have a nice core of dedicated, hardworking runners,” Barth said. “All our varsity runners from this meet are underclassmen and show promise. We need to approach this last period of the season as a beginning of something bigger for next season. If we can get this core of 10-12 underclassmen to really attack the summer miles leading into next season, we can take the final step forward and move up in the team standings.”
Jace Beall was the lone runner for the Ballard boys to make all-conference. Beall ran a 5-kilometer time of 17:32.32 to place 11th.
“If anyone is peaking at the right time and running with confidence, it is Jace,” Barth said. “He ran the best time of his career and really paced a good effort by the boys.”
Nathan Wuestenberg and Ryan Ledet took 22nd and 23rd with respective times of 18:26.53 and 18:26.72. Chase Winterboer ended up 27th in 18:40.21 and Carter Thompson 29th with an 18:42.01 showing.
Gage Long and Zane Charter were the other Bomber varsity runners. Long ran a 19:08.41 to place 31st and Charter came in 33rd at 19:09.06.
Ade-Desoto-Minburn’s Nate Mueller won the boys’ conference title in 16:21.01. Bondurant-Farrar’s Drake VanBaale came in second at 16:54.53.
