BOONE - A huge edge in the trenches was the difference for Ballard against No. 7 (Class 3A) Boone in a Class 3A District 2 battle Friday at Boone.

The Bombers completely controlled the line of scrimmage to overpower the Toreadors and earn an impressive 28-7 victory.

“Great team win,” Ballard head football coach Al Christian said. “(The) guys prepared all week to win and came into the game believing they would win.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Boone drew first blood when quarterback Mason Hulse found the end zone on a 22-yard run less than three minutes into the second quarter.

From then on it was all Ballard.

The Bombers took a 13-7 lead at the half. Isaac Schafbuch had a 43-yard touchdown run and Gavin Hobbs finished off a scoring drive with a 2-yard scoring tote to put Ballard in front at the break.

Ballard continued to enforce its will in the third quarter. Schafbuch had two big touchdown runs from 23 and 59 yards out to break the game open.

Brendan Vincent capped the scoring with a 30-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

For the game, Ballard battered the Boone defense for 451 yards, including 361 on the ground. The Bomber defense was even more impressive, limiting the Toreadors to just 29 rushing yards on 19 attempts and 129 total yards.

Schafbuch was outstanding as a dual-threat quarterback for Ballard. He ran for a game-high 136 yards on 15 carries and also completed 4 of 6 passes for 90 yards.
