GLIDDEN - Turnovers and a rough first half on defense doomed the Collins-Maxwell football team in a 63-0 loss to Glidden-Ralston Friday at Glidden.
The Spartans (0-6) gave the ball up five times during the game. Glidden-Ralston returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
“Turnovers killed us,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said. “We did not protect the ball.”
Glidden-Ralston also finished with 302 yards. The Wildcats ran for 248 yards on just 27 carries as they built a 49-0 lead at the half and coasted the rest of the way.
“We just cannot tackle,” Crnkovich said. “We emphasize breaking down and wrapping up, but we could not Friday.”
Crnkovich said he was pleased with the effort of Caleb Fullerton and Michael Hartgers in the loss. Fullerton ran for 35 yards before going down with an injury and Hartgers filled in with 18 yards on just three carries.
“Our running game was hit and miss, but I can tell you that Fullerton ran the best he has run all season,” Crnkovich said. “The stats don’t show, but he made great cuts and ran the ball hard. Hartgers stepped up as well at tailback when Fullerton went down for the last two series. Hartgers is suppose to be a lineman, but somehow I can put him anywhere on the field and he can get yards, whether it’s at running back or wide out. He’s got a set of hands for an offensive lineman.”
Kadin Bennett completed 7 of 19 passes for 47 yards and Mason Markley threw for 21 yards. Jordan Barrett made five catches for 36 yards, Brock Staudt one catch for 20 yards and Brett Livesay three grabs for 12 yards.
On defense Fullerton made five tackles and Livesay four. Hartgers, Bennett and Zach Martinez tacked on three apiece.
Grant Borkowski and Nathan Brandt each returned an interception for to help Glidden-Ralston improve to 3-3 on the season. Trent Wiederien ran for 121 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats.
Collins-Maxwell returns to Maxwell for the first time since week two this Friday. The Spartans will face Wayne (2-4) for its homecoming game at 7 p.m.
