HUXLEY - The Ballard volleyball team split four matches at the Ballard Invitational Saturday in Huxley.


The Bombers knocked off Grand View Christian and Central Decatur and came up short against powerful Johnston and Pella teams during the tournament as their season record went to 6-5.


Ballard defeated Grand View Christian in three sets.


The Bombers came back from a heartbreaking 24-22 loss in the opening set to dominate the second by a 21-14 score. That forced a rally game, where Ballard prevailed by a 15-11 margin.


Olivia Vier was outstanding at outside hitter for Ballard against Grand View Christian. Vier had 16 kills, 12 digs and one block.


Ana Vier added six kills, seven digs and one block and Carley Wilson put up three kills, six digs and one ace. Brandelle McGinn chipped in two kills and three aces and Cassie Smith contributed one kill and block apiece.


Hannah Elliott stepped up at setter and performed well with 23 assists, nine digs and two aces. Mykelann Gray delivered 12 digs and four assists, Karlee Ahrenholtz five digs and Sarah Stolte one dig.


The Bombers swept Central Decatur by scores of 21-9 and 21-11. Olivia Vier had six kills, five digs, one block and one ace and Wilson added four kills and three aces to pace Ballard against the Cardinals.


Ana Vier put up three kills, two aces and one dig and Smith one kill for Ballard versus Central Decatur. Elliott dished out 13 assists and had three digs, McGinn finished with three aces, Gray totaled six digs and one assist and Ahrenholtz tacked on one dig.


Ballard fell to a Johnston team rated No. 15 in Class 5A by scores of 21-12 and 21-16. Wilson put up three kills and digs apiece; Olivia Vier four digs, one kill and one ace and Smith one kill in the loss.


Elliott produced six digs and five assists, Gray nine digs and Ana Vier, Ahrenholtz and Molly Houge one dig apiece versus the Dragons.


Pella swept Ballard by scores of 21-12 and 21-17. Olivia Vier produced eight kills, six digs, one assist and one block and Elliott nine assists, three digs and one ace against the Little Dutch.


Ana Vier finished with two kills and one dig, Gray five digs and one assist and Smith one kill against Pella. Wilson added two digs and one assist, McGinn two digs and Houge one dig.


HUXLEY - Ballard kept its hot start in Raccoon River Conference play going Sept. 12 with a sweep of Perry in Huxley.


The Bombers downed the Bluejays by scores of 25-8, 25-15 and 25-19 to push their RRC record to 3-0. Ballard won five-set thrillers at Winterset and Bondurant-Farrar in its first two conference contests.


Against Perry, the Bombers turned in an excellent .325 kill-efficiency rate with 32 kills and only seven errors in 77 attacks. Ballard came up with 49 digs and eight blocks on defense and went 65 of 74 serving with eight aces.


Ana Vier was sensational at middle hitter for Ballard in the win. She had 16 kills with no errors in 27 attacks and also came up with four blocks, two digs and one ace.


Olivia Vier finished with nine digs, eight kills, two blocks and two aces in the win. Cassidy Shepley was strong at setter with 25 assists, five digs, two aces, one kill and one block.


Mykelann Gray finished with 16 digs and three assists at the libero spot and Carley Wilson helped out with five kills, five digs, two aces and one block. Sarah Stolte finished with four digs and one assist, Karlee Ahrenholtz four digs, Cassie Smith two kills, Hannah Elliott two digs and one ace and Molly Houge two digs.
