ALLEMAN - The North Polk football team had trouble slowing down a balanced Norwalk team in a 42-14 loss to the Warriors Friday in Alleman.
Norwalk topped 200 yards rushing and passing, totaling 438 yards. North Polk was also hurt by three turnovers, falling to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Class 3A District 6.
“We played really hard, but weren’t able to capitalize on our scoring chances,” North Polk head football coach Evan Groepper said. “Their depth wore us out in the fourth quarter.”
Norwalk led 21-7 at the half. The Comets still hung tough after three quarters, trailing 28-14.
Mason Russell accounted for both North Polk touchdowns. He scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter and finished off a scoring drive in the third quarter with a 1-yard run.
North Polk did a great job avoiding penalties, finishing with only three for 15 yards. But two interceptions and a lost fumble proved costly to the Comets.
“We made a lot of growth from the Grinnell game, but are still making too many mistakes to beat good teams,” Groepper said. “We have to improve on all of the situational football plays and have to cut out the turnovers.”
The Comets ended up with 267 total yards. Colten Parkins threw for 155, Russell ran for 90 and Ryan Fausch had nine catches for 82 yards.
Quinten Sommers added four catches for 47 yards and Jeff Lamp picked up 23 yards on the ground for North Polk.
Sully Hartsook made 10 tackles, Lamp had four stops plus a sack, Tyler Sinclair made five tackles and a fumble recovery and Mark Cox added one sack for the Comets on defense. Erik Lackore chipped in five tackles, Caleb Lomica 4.5 and Alec Bolletta four.
Max Sutcliffe threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns and Grant Garner ran for 167 and two scores and added 50 yards receiving for Norwalk. Jaron Onken had eight tackles for the Warriors, who improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the district.
Up next for North Polk is a road game with Nevada (3-1, 1-1). The Cubs are coming off a 28-14 win at Knoxville.
“We are excited to get back out on the field this week at Nevada,” Groepper said.
The game will be Nevada’s homecoming affair. It is set to start at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at Cub Stadium in Nevada.
