MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell football team had a rough night on offense for the second game in a row Friday as the Spartans were handed a 58-0 loss by Clarinda Academy at Maxwell.
Playing in its first-ever season as a program and adjusting to 8-man football for the first time, Collins-Maxwell (0-2) saw it still has plenty of kinks to work out against Clarinda Academy. The Spartans had 126 yards of total offense, suffering their second shutout loss to start the season.
“Our offense had good drives, just could not get in the end zone,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said. “Our defense played well, just gave up the big plays on third down.”
Crnkovich said tackling and making plays on third down are things his team must strive to improve upon, and added that his players must also take better care of the football. The Spartan coach also stressed better pass protection is needed for his team to sustain drives.
Clarinda Academy took control of the game early. The Eagles put up 24 points in the first quarter and led 36-0 at the half.
Michael Hartgers ran for 48 yards and Caleb Fullerton added 31 on the ground for Collins-Maxwell. Simon McKinney completed 8 of 15 passes for 40 yards and Brett Livesay made four catches for 32 yards.
Hartgers had five tackles and Kadin Bennett came up with 4.5 to lead Collins-Maxwell defensively. Fullerton tacked on three stops, Cody Haugen registered 2.5 and Livesay and Cody Galbraith came up with two apiece.
Collins-Maxwell will travel to Ar-We-Va this Friday for its first road game. The game will start at 7 p.m. in Westside.
