HUXLEY - A few adjustments paid big dividends for Ballard on defense and the Bomber offense easily overcome a costly injury in a 43-7 victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn Friday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
The Bomber defense held ADM to 44 yards rushing and didn’t allow the Tigers to sustain a drive all game. The defense and special teams also provided a big spark for the offense early to help Ballard race out to a 20-0 lead.
“We’re young, but we learn and we’re aggressive,” Ballard senior defensive lineman Ben Lee said. “We have a very a strong, big defensive line and our (defensive) backs have got some talent. Everything clicked — we played hard and just got aggressive.
Lee finished with 11 tackles and one tackle for loss. He also recovered a fumble and blocked a punt in the first quarter to set up to short Bomber touchdown drives.
Lee credited key adjustments during practice to the defense being able to bounce back strong from a 43-28 loss to Carlisle in the season opener. He moved from middle linebacker back to the defensive line, and other players also moved around to make Ballard a more dominant force on that side of the ball.
“We got a turnover, which we didn’t last week, and other than one breakdown defensively, we really got better,” Ballard head football coach Al Christian said. “We’ve still got a long ways to go, but we’re young, play hard and if we just keep working, we’ll be OK.”
On offense Ballard finished with 360 yards. The Bombers ran for 293 yards, despite losing all-state tailback Hunter Wright to an ankle injury in the first quarter.
Skyler Noftsger stepped up to rush for 136 yards and one touchdown in Wright’s absence.
“Someone had to do it and I wanted to be the person to hit them up,” Noftsger said. “Got to give a lot to the line and (Gavin) Hobbs. Just got to follow him up the hole.”
In addition to great blocking, Hobbs also ran for 46 yards and three touchdowns. He, too, was very complimentary of the Bomber offensive front.
“It’s a beautiful thing when you’re running up the middle and you see your middle three — all over 250 pounds — shove everyone out of the way,” Hobbs said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”
Reece Huen added 49 yards and one touchdown rushing. Quarterback Isaac Schafbuch ran for 58 yards and one score and he also completed 5 of 12 passes for 67 yards.
Sam Andrews had 6.5 tackles and a sack for a safety. Josh DeTar picked up six tackles, Blake Henga chipped in 5.5 stops, Justice Sullivan recorded five and Ben Hokel finished with 4.5 for Ballard.
Up next for the Bombers (1-1) is the start of Class 3A District 2 play. The Bombers travel to Perry to face the Bluejays.
“We’re worked all week and we’re ready to work next week,” Hobbs said. “We’ll bring it.”
ADM fell to 0-2 with the loss. Matthew West threw for 163 yards and a touchdown and Gavin O’Steen made four catches for 113 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter for the Tigers.
