ALLEMAN - The North Polk football team wasn’t able to slow Perry down the stretch, suffering a 38-31 loss to the Bluejays in double overtime Friday at Alleman.

The Comets came back from a 17-7 deficit to go in front by a touchdown in the third quarter. But Perry tied the game in the fourth quarter to force an overtime period.

The game went into a second extra session after both teams scored a touchdown and added an extra point in overtime. In the second overtime Perry scored again, but this time North Polk was unable to answer, falling to 1-1 on the season.

“It was a back-and-forth, exciting game,” North Polk head football coach Evan Groepper said. “We were disappointed with the amount of mistakes we made in the game. Through two games we have shown flashes we can be pretty good, but we really need to work on our consistency.”

A short Mark Campos touchdown run and a big-play, 55-yard scoring pass from Alexis Garrido to Reece Dunlap gave Perry a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Mason Russell responded with a big 60-yard touchdown run for North Polk, but Perry’s German Alvaranga nailed a 28-yard field goal to put Perry up 10.

But North Polk’s defense came up with a big play before the end of the first quarter as Tyler Sinclair picked off a Garrido pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown.

The Comet defense continued to surge over the next two quarters. North Polk held Perry scoreless during that stretch and that enabled the Comets to eventually move in front.

Colin Swygman gave North Polk the lead with a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter. Later in the period, Sully Hartsook hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Colten Parkins and North Polk held a 24-17 advantage.

The fourth quarter saw Perry’s offense break out of its slump to tie the game. Garrido finished off a Bluejay drive with a 6-yard touchdown run and North Polk was unable to answer, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, North Polk got on the board with a 10-yard Russell touchdown run. Perry also found the end zone as Brandon Kenyon caught a 3-yard touchdown pass.

That sent the game into the second overtime, where Garrido found Dunlap with a 12-yard touchdown pass for the eventual winning touchdown.

For the game, Perry had 364 yards to North Polk’s 333. The Comets forced three turnovers, but also committed four and they were hurt by nine penalties.

Russell ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns and Parkins completed 12 of 28 passes for 163 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Ryan Fausch made five receptions for 68 yards, Sinclair had three grabs for 35 yards and Quentin Sommers caught three passes for 32 yards.

Sinclair had a huge game on defense in defeat. He made 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions. Russell, Hartsook and Jeff Lamp each had six tackles, Mark Cox contributed five tackles and one sack and Alec Bolletta finished with 4.5 stops plus a fumble recovery.

Garrido threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions and he also ran for 34 yards and a score for Perry. Dunlap caught eight passes for 118 yards and two scores and added 42 yards rushing, Kenyon made seven grabs for 66 yards and a score and Campos totaled 10 tackles and a sack.

North Polk receives a bye this week.

“It will be nice having a week off to get healthy, build some depth and work on some fundamental things that we are struggling with,” Groepper said.

The Comets next play Sept. 8 at Grinnell (0-1) to open Class 3A District 6 play. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
