The Ballard softball program had eight players given all-Raccoon River Conference recognition by the conference coaches in 2017.


The Bombers put three players on the first team and three on the second. They also had two named honorable mention after placing second to Winterset in the conference with a 12-2 record.


Senior pitcher Abby Carlin, and freshmen Isabell Hobbs and Skylar Rigby were named to the first team from Ballard. Carlin was a unanimous pick.


During RRC play, Carlin went 9-1 with a 1.49 earned-run average, 83 strikeouts and only seven walks in 75 innings of work. She also hit .256 with 10 RBI.


Hobbs hit .333 with a .548 slugging average, four doubles, one triple, one home run, 11 runs and 13 RBI in conference games. At second base, she recorded 26 putouts, 19 assists and only two errors.


Rigby posted a .396 batting average, .482 on-base percentage, .708 slugging average, nine doubles, two homers, 13 runs and nine RBI against RRC foes. At catcher she made 99 putouts, five assists and only one error.


The other players named to the all-RRC first team were: Boone’s Laura Anderson and Diana Slight; Carlisle’s Agatha Beier, Taylor Dubois, Alyvia Dubois and Kennedy Preston; Winterset’s Macy Johnson, Sophie Stover, Danny Barker and Ally Pickering; Perry’s Emma Olejniczak and Johanna Diw; Adel-Desoto-Minburn’s Abbie Hlas and Ashley Tennant and Bondurant-Farrar’s Sydney Carroll. Anderson, Beier, Taylor Dubois, Johnson, Olejniczak, Slight and Stover all joined Carlin as unanimous picks.


Sophomore outfielder Karlee Ahrenholtz, sophomore third baseman Rachel Newell and freshman first baseman Maggie Larson were the three Bombers chosen to the all-RRC second team.


Ahrenholtz hit .243 with a .364 OBP, two doubles and three RBI in conference games. In left field, she made eight putouts.


Newell posted a .375 batting average with a .519 OBP, 10 runs and 10 steals versus RRC competition. In the field, she had 15 putouts and 11 assists.


Larson hit .267 with three doubles, four home runs, seven runs and 14 RBI against the rest of the conference. Larson went error-free in conference games with 97 putouts and seven assists.


Bondurant-Farrar’s Kenzie Adkins; Boone’s Laura Calkins, Emma Dighton and Caitlynne Shadle; Carlisle’s Meredith Hoffman and Sara Scott; Perry’s Rachel Kinney; Winterset’s Emma Lowden; Carroll’s Ashley Onken and ADM’s Lexi Wyant were the other players named to the second team.


Sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Hannah Elliott and freshman shortstop Isabella Johnson were the two Ballard players named all-RRC honorable mention.


Elliott went 2-1 with a 1.40 ERA, eight strikeouts and five walks in 25 innings and she made eight assists and five putouts in the field during RRC play. At the plate she hit .229 with three doubles, four runs and four RBI.


Johnson delivered a .360 batting average in conference games with five runs. In the field, Johnson came up with 39 assists and 15 putouts.


Ballard head softball coach Charlie Husak was named RRC Co-Coach of the Year, along with Winterset’s Steve Corkrean. In his first year as head coach, Husak not only guided the Bombers to second behind Winterset in the conference, but Ballard also came in runner-up to the Huskies at the state tournament in Class 4A.
