COLLINS - A big blast from Brady Kemp propelled the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team to a 7-5 upset of No. 4 (Class 2A) Woodward-Granger Friday in Collins.
Playing in his final home game, Kemp belted a grand-slam home run to highlight a five-run third inning for the Raiders. That put CMB on top, 6-3, after Woodward-Granger had briefly taken the lead following a three-run second inning.
CMB added another run in the fourth inning. Woodward-Granger came back with two runs in the sixth, but the Raiders kept the Hawks off the board in the seventh to finish off the big win, moving to 4-18 on the season.
Kemp ended up 2-for-3 with an impressive five RBI in the win. Fellow seniors Creighton Caple, Brady Ross, Tucker Maxwell and Adam Smith also came up big at the plate.
Caple was 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece and Ross finished 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs. Maxwell finished 1-for-4 with one run and Smith went 1-for-3 with a run.
Bryce Bacon walked and scored and Cole Damman was 1-for-2 with a walk for the Raiders.
Carter Nelsen was the winning CMB pitcher. Nelsen gave up three runs on six hits and four walks in 4 ⅓ innings.
Caple allowed two runs — one earned — on two hits with one strikeout in one inning of work. Travis Lindemoen tossed 1 ⅔ scoreless innings and gave up two hits with two strikeouts.
Matt Buch allowed seven earned runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in three innings as the losing Woodward-Granger pitcher. Reese Jamison was 2-for-3 with a double, run and three steals and Austin Scharlau hit a solo home run for the Hawks.

DES MOINES - Collins-Maxwell-Baxter gave No. 7 (Class 3A) Saydel fits for 3 ½ innings before getting overwhelmed late in a 16-6 loss to the Eagles in five innings June 29 at Saydel High School.
CMB led the powerful Saydel team 6-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. But the Eagles tied the score with a five-run fourth, then doubled that production the next inning with an impressive 10-run outburst to end the game early.
CMB totaled six hits in the loss. Brady Kemp was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, Travis Lindemoen finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and Creighton Caple was 1-for-3 with two runs to pace the Raider attack.
Tucker Maxwell went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk. Derrick Klemme walked twice and stole a base, Carter Nelsen walked once and Cole Damman and Bryce Bacon each drove in a run.
Caple was the losing pitcher. He allowed five runs — four earned — on two hits and one walk in ⅓ of an inning. Kemp got the start, he gave up six runs on seven hits with one strikeout in 3 ⅔ innings, and Lindemoen gave up five unearned runs on five hits with two walks in ⅔ of an inning.
The loss put CMB at 2-13 in the HOIC.
Brandon Reese gave up two runs — one earned — with three strikeouts and one walk in 2 ⅓ innings to get the win in relief for Saydel. Craig Garrison doubled and drove in four runs, Devin Porter went 3-for-3 with a double, homer and three runs and Joe Boehler ended up 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI for the Eagles on offense.
