PRAIRIE CITY - The North Polk baseball team kept up its hot streak in Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 5-0 shutout over Prairie City-Monroe Friday at Prairie City.
Colten Parkins completely outclassed the PCM hitters all game, helping the Comets win their seventh HOIC game in a row to go to 11-3 in the conference and 20-6 overall. Parkins fired a one-hitter and he struck out 11 batters with only three walks, going all seven innings.
North Polk totaled seven hits on offense. The Comets also took advantage of four PCM errors.
North Polk did most of its damage early. The Comets scored twice in the first inning and added one run over each of the next two frames before putting on the finishing touches with another run in the fifth.
Jeff Lamp doubled, scored three times and drove in a run; Ben Rupe was 2-for-4 with a run and Mason Russell went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace North Polk at the plate. Matthew Antle singled and drove in a run, Adam Moxley doubled and Jake Johnson crossed the plate once.
Colby Cupp added an RBI and Payton Johnson walked once for North Polk.
Derek Brown gave up five runs — just two earned — on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings as the losing PCM pitcher. Noah Henkenius singled for the only PCM hit and Braden Phifer walked twice.
