ALLEMAN - The North Polk softball team closed out its regular season with an 8-3 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Prairie City-Monroe Friday at Alleman.


The Comets broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. PCM came back with two runs in the top of the fifth, but the Comets plated four more runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back, finishing 11-4 in the HOIC and improving to 17-12 overall.


Rebecca Rimathe homered, doubled, walked, scored twice and drove in two runs in her final home game to spark North Polk. Hannah Foster was 3-for-3 with an RBI; Carolyn Steffen ended up 1-for-3 with two runs; Jenna Fagen went 1-for-1 with one walk, steal, run and RBI apiece and Ellie Owen and Paige Sandberg both singled and scored.


Maddy Hill singled and drove in a run, Sydney Anderson singled and Cali Capaldo scored one run for the Comets.


Sophie Swygman earned the win for North Polk. Swygman worked around 11 PCM hits, giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

ALLEMAN - North Polk was unable to overcome a sluggish start in a 7-3 non-conference loss to Class 5A school Ankeny June 29 at Alleman.


The Comets trailed 6-0 going into the fifth inning. They fell behind 5-0 after two frames and Ankeny added another run in the fourth.


North Polk put up two runs in the fifth. Ankeny came back with a score in the top of the sixth and the Comets countered with another run in the bottom of the inning, but they were unable to get any closer, falling to 16-12 on the season.


Hannah Foster was 2-for-3 with a run, Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-4 and Sydney Anderson was 2-for-2 with one run and RBI apiece for North Polk in the loss. Trisha Sporra, Carolyn Steffen, Paige Sandberg and Olivia Patterson each singled once; Emily Patterson scored one run; Ellie Owen picked up an RBI and Jenna Fagen stole two bases.


Sophie Swygman gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and one walk and she had four strikeouts in seven innings as the losing North Polk pitcher. Paige Jacobsen was the victorious Ankeny pitcher after allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts.


Peyton Daugherty went 4-for-4 with a double, four steals and four runs to set the tone for Ankeny on offense. Kennedy Thomas was 2-for-4 with a double, run and three RBI for the Hawks.
