BOONE - The North Polk softball team went 1-2 at the Boone Invitational with a victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond and losses to Boone and Des Moines Christian Saturday in Boone.

The Comets defeated Fort Dodge St. Edmond by a 12-2 score in five innings. North Polk was dealt a 10-0 setback by both Boone and Des Moines Christian, concluding the tournament with a 16-10 overall record.

In the game with St. Edmond, the Comets produced 12 hits. North Polk got hot in the second inning with five runs and added four more in the third to take charge.

Hannah Foster went 3-for-3 with a steal and three runs and RBI apiece to lead the Comets offensively in the victory over the Gaels. Carolyn Steffen doubled twice, stole a base and drove in three runs; Abby Hill was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs; Ellie Owen finished 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and and RBI and Jenna Fagen wound up 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI.

Maddy Hill was 1-for-2 with two runs, Cali Capaldo ended up 1-for-1 with a run, steal and two RBI and Paige Sandberg singled and drove in a run.

Sophie Swygman allowed two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk in five innings as the winning North Polk pitcher. Chloe Lewison gave up six runs — three earned — with one strikeout and walk apiece in three innings as the losing Gael pitcher.

Megan Flattery was 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI and Erin Flattery tripled and drove in a run for St. Edmond on offense.

North Polk hung with Boone for four innings before things quickly went south. Boone broke open a 1-0 game with three runs in the fifth inning and the Toreadors added six more runs in the sixth to end the game an inning early.

Swygman gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings as the losing pitcher versus Boone. Chloe Dougherty allowed six runs — four earned — on six hits with no walks in one inning of work.

Maddy Hill doubled once and Owen hit a single for the only North Polk hits off Boone pitcher Emma Dighton. Dighton struck out two with no walks in six innings.

Lauren Calkins was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI to lead Boone offensively. Laura Anderson finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Toreadors.

North Polk put up eight hits in the loss to Des Moines Christian. But the Comets failed to string anything together and they also finished without an extra-base hit, suffering the shutout loss.

Des Moines Christian scored in six of the seven innings of play. The Lions pounded out an impressive 20 hits.

Eighth-grader Alex Drendt got her first varsity start and freshman Emily Olson also saw her first varsity action of the season on the mound for North Polk versus Des Moines Christian. Drendt took the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits with two walks in two innings and Olson surrendered six runs — five earned — on 14 hits with one walk in five innings.

Abby Hill went 3-for-3 and Owen, Steffen, Maddy Hill, Sandberg and Olivia Patterson each came up with one single for North Polk against the Lions. Maddy Hill also drew a walk for the Comets.

Olivia Penland finished with one strikeout and walk apiece, going all seven innings to get the win for Des Moines Christian. Alayna Bakke doubled, tripled and scored once and Katie Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI to pace the Lions at the plate.

ROLAND - A late rally gave North Polk a 6-3 Heart of Iowa Conference road win over Roland-Story June 21 at Roland.

The Comets broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. They had scored twice in the third and once in the fourth and Roland-Story put up one run apiece in the second, fourth and fifth frames.

Rebecca Rimathe and Trisha Sporra were the stars on offense for North Polk.

Rimathe walked, doubled, homered and drove in three runs. Sporra went 3-for-3 with a walk, four steals and three runs.

Maddy Hill was 2-for-3 with an RBI; Carolyn Steffen singled, walked twice and scored once and Paige Sandberg and Sophie Swygman each collected one single. Cali Capaldo and Jenna Fagen scored one run apiece and Ellie Owen knocked in one run.

Swygman gave up three runs — two earned — on six hits in seven innings as the winning Comet pitcher. Swygman struck out four batters and walked two.

The victory put North Polk at 10-3 in the HOIC.

GILBERT - Great pitching and defense combined with a late spurt on offense to get North Polk a 6-0 victory at Gilbert June 19.

Sophie Swygman fired a five-hitter with two strikeouts and only one walk in seven innings to get the win on the mound for North Polk. On offense, North Polk connected for 11 hits.

The Comets scored twice in the first inning and held a slim two-run lead until the fifth. North Polk put up one run in both the fifth and sixth frames and two in the seventh to secure the victory.

Carolyn Steffen went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, one steal and two RBI for North Polk at the plate. Trisha Sporra was 3-for-4 with one run, Rebecca Rimathe 2-for-4 with two RBI, Paige Sandberg 1-for-3 with an RBI and Ellie Owen 1-for-4 with a run.

Maddy Hill added a single, and Cali Capaldo, Emily Patterson and Jenna Fagen each scored once for North Polk. Bailey Hougham drew one walk for the Comets.

Jordyn Pike gave up three earned runs with one walk in seven innings as the losing Gilbert pitcher. Pike also doubled once and Riley Nelson was 2-for-2 with a double for the Tigers.
