ANKENY - The North Polk baseball team came up short against two quality opponents at the Prange Classic in Ankeny Friday.


North Polk suffered a 5-2 setback at the hands of Des Moines Christian. The Comets also lost a 7-6 battle with Bishop Heelan Catholic, dropping to 17-6 on the season.


In the loss to Des Moines Christian, the Comets were hurt by a three-run Lion second inning. North Polk only scored once in the first and once in the sixth frames, finishing with six hits and two errors to nine hits and no defensive mistakes for Des Moines Christian.


Colby Cupp was 2-for-4 with a run, Payton Johnson finished 2-for-3, Jake Johnson doubled and scored and Dawson Deitch went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Comets. Ben Rupe drove in one run, Jeff Lamp walked twice and Adam Moxley drew one free pass.


Ryan Spaulding took the loss after giving up three unearned runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings of work. Cupp surrendered two runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout in four innings.


Blake Witty was the winning Des Moines Christian pitcher after allowing two runs on six hits with three walks in 5 ⅓ innings. Andrew Fox doubled, walked three times and drove in two runs and Carter Paterson was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Lions on offense.


North Polk let an early lead slip away in the loss to Bishop Heelan Catholic. The Comets were up 5-2 after three innings, but the Crusaders plated two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to move in front.


In the bottom of the seventh, Jake Johnson hit a one-out double and scored on a ground out by Dawson Deitch. But the Comets couldn’t get anyone else on base to settle for the loss.


Jeff Lamp was 2-for-2 with two walks, one run and one RBI and Cupp finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for North Polk against Bishop Heelan. Johnson and Colten Parkins were both 1-for-3 with two runs, Deitch and Tyler Sinclair both finished with a hit and an RBI and Rupe had a double.


Matthew Antle gave up seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings as the losing Comet pitcher versus Bishop Heelan. Rupe allowed no runs on five hits with one strikeout in 2 ⅔ innings.


Collin Knapp gave up five runs — four earned — on seven hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in 2 ⅔ innings as the winning Crusader pitcher. Tom Schiltz was 3-for-4 with three runs to pace Bishop Heelan on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk was in top form against Roland-Story in a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader June 21 at Alleman.


The Comets kept the Norsemen off the scoreboard in both games, outscoring them by a combined margin of 14-0 to raise their HOIC record to 9-3.


North Polk pulled off a 4-0 victory in the opening game. Jake Johnson was dominant on the mound and the Comets finished with eight hits on offense.


Johnson fired a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and just one walk, going all seven innings to earn the shutout victory. His outstanding performance enabled the Comets to easily overcome three errors in the field.


On offense, North Polk scored one run apiece in the second and third innings. The Comets added two more scores in the sixth.


Jeff Lamp was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Colby Cupp finished 2-for-3 with one walk, run and RBI apiece. Johnson and Payton Johnson both singled and drove in a run, Ben Rupe and Matthew Antle each singled once, Colten Parkins knocked in a run and Reid Summers and Ryan Spaulding each scored once for the Comets.


Aaron Craig surrendered two earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks, going all seven innings for Roland-Story in a losing effort. Colby Gray singled and walked and Nick Stole and Caleb Schlatter each singled once for the Norsemen.


In the nightcap Parkins was overpowering on the mound, and North Polk scored at least two runs in four different innings to earn a 10-0 victory in six innings.


Parkins only gave up one hit and he struck out nine with no walks, going all six innings to get the victory for North Polk. He also singled and drove in two runs at the plate.


Ben Rupe was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs, Summers ended up 1-for-1 with two runs, Jake Johnson went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Adam Moxley finished 2-for-2 with a run, and Austin McCarthur singled and drove in a run for the Comets. Rupe ended up 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs, Lamp scored and drove in two runs, Brad Chiles knocked in a run, Antle went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Dawson Deitch and Spaulding each scored once.


Jakob Pittman gave up three runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 1 ⅓ innings as the losing Roland-Story pitcher in the second game. Landon Greiner singled once for the only Norseman hit of the game.

ALLEMAN - A huge fifth inning helped North Polk dismantle a Gilbert team rated No. 9 in Class 3A, 9-1, June 19 at Alleman.


North Polk scored all nine of its runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. Jake Johnson, Colby Cupp, Colten Parkins, Jeff Lamp and Dawson Deitch all singled in a run for the Comets in the fifth to quickly turn a pitcher’s duel into a rout.


The Comets totaled 12 hits on offense and they made only one error in the field. Deitch went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Matthew Antle was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Johnson, Anthony Capaldo, Jeff Lamp and Colten Parkins each put up one hit, run and RBI apiece.


Cupp finished 1-for-3 with an RBI; Adam Moxley chipped in one single and run apiece; Mason Russell was 1-for-2 with two runs; Brad Chiles singled and Payton Johnson scored once for North Polk.


Cupp was the winning pitcher. He threw six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and gave up three hits and one walk.


Sutton Sears surrendered one run on three walks with two strikeouts in one inning for North Polk.


Nathan Chasey went 4 ⅔ innings and allowed nine runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks as the losing pitcher for Gilbert. Mike Hart walked and scored and Steven Lawrence, Nick Thielen and Landon Howard each had one hit for the Tigers on offense.
