The Ballard baseball team split two games at the Prange Classic, held at Saydel High School and Ankeny Saturday.


The Bombers knocked off two-time defending state champion Clear Lake by a 10-5 score and fell to Van Meter in a 4-3 heartbreaker. Ballard concluded the day with an 11-12 overall record.


Ballard used strong third and sixth innings to get past Clear Lake. The Bombers put up four runs in each inning, building a 5-1 lead after the third, then putting the game away in the sixth.


Isaac Schafbuch was the driving force behind Ballard’s success at the plate versus Clear Lake. Schafbuch went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and four RBI.


Brooks Fleischmann finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Gannon Manfull ended up 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and Austin Edwards was 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece. Jack Luster and Reece Huen each went 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece, Clayton Poots singled and Taylor Roberts scored twice.


Luster was the winning pitcher. He gave up five earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5 innings.


Roberts threw two scoreless innings and allowed one hit with one strikeout and walk apiece.


Jacob Peterson gave up six earned runs with one strikeout and one walk, going all six innings for Clear Lake in a losing effort. Nathan Tofte went 3-for-4 with the bat and Ben Finn was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI for the Lions.


Ballard suffered a difficult loss at the hands of Van Meter. The Bombers led 3-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, only to let the game slip away.


Edwards and Huen both went 2-for-2 against Van Meter and they accounted for all three Ballard Runs. Edwards scored all three Bomber runs and Huen knocked him in each time.


Schafbuch was 2-for-4 at the plate versus Van Meter. Luster and Fleischmann each drew one walk.


Hersch Maxey gave up one run with one walk and no hits in the seventh inning as the losing Ballard pitcher. Schafbuch got the start and surrendered three earned runs on three hits and seven walks with four strikeouts in six innings.


Brett Berg picked up the win in relief for Van Meter after throwing ⅔ of a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Owen Crawford gave up three runs — two earned — on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 6 ⅓ innings for the Bulldogs.


Berg was also 1-for-1 with one run and RBI apiece and Brady O’Brien doubled and scored once for Van Meter.

SLATER - Ballard had a tough time slowing down Carlisle in a 16-6 Raccoon River Conference loss to the Wildcats Friday at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.


Carlisle jumped out to a 9-0 lead to force Ballard into an uphill climb all game. The Bombers closed within 9-5 after three innings, but the Wildcats put up four unanswered runs over the next two frames, then added three more scores in the seventh to put the game away.


Carlisle finished the game with 14 hits. Ballard was also hurt by five errors in the field.


On offense, Ballard came up with six hits. The Bombers also drew five walks and were helped by three Carlisle errors.


Jack Luster was 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Gannon Manfull doubled, scored and drove in a run for the Bombers. Tanner Brock singled and scored, Kade Reinertson singled and walked, Codey Erickson walked and scored and Taylor Roberts crossed the plate twice for the Bombers.


Colin Anderson gave up five runs — four earned — on five hits in ⅓ of an inning as the losing Ballard pitcher. Austin Edwards allowed seven runs — six earned — on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk, Jack Luster gave up one unearned run on one hit in 1 ⅔ innings and Brock allowed one unearned run on one hit and walk apiece with one strikeout in one inning.


Will Stalder allowed two runs — one earned — on two walks for the Bombers.


Isaiah Henrichs surrendered five runs — three earned — on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in 4 ⅓ innings as the winning Carlisle pitcher. Dylan Berg was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBI; Max Goodhue 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBI; Henrichs 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI and Ben Rowray 2-for-4 with a double and three runs for the Wildcats.

IOWA FALLS - Ballard used good discipline at the plate to outlast Iowa Falls-Alden for a 12-7 non-conference victory June 20 at Iowa Falls.


The Bombers picked up 12 walks as a team and also totaled nine hits. Ballard scored five times in the third inning and four in the fifth to build a 10-3 lead, and the Bombers withstood a four-run Cadet sixth for their fifth victory in six games.


Reece Huen was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI and Austin Edwards ended up 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run and two RBI for Ballard on offense. Codey Erickson was 1-for-3 with two runs and RBI apiece, Clayton Poots 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI, Gannon Manfull 1-for-5 with an RBI and Kade Reinertson 1-for-4.


Tanner Brock walked four times and scored twice and Isaac Schafbuch picked up three free passes and scored two runs.


Manfull allowed seven runs — three earned — on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 5 ⅓ innings as the winning pitcher. Colin Anderson threw 1 ⅔ scoreless innings and gave up just one hit with four strikeouts and no walks for the Bombers.


Jackson French was 2-for-4 with a double, run and three RBI for Iowa Falls-Alden in a losing effort. Kyle Arends was the losing Cadet pitcher after giving up seven runs — six earned — on six walks and four hits with two strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings.
