ROLAND - North Polk split four games going against top-notch competition at the Kiwanis Invitational Friday at Saturday at Bill Hennessy Field in Roland.

The Comets won both of their games on Friday and came up short in two games on Saturday. Friday, the Comets defeated a Perry team rated No. 7 in Class 4A and whipped Madrid, and they fell to two rated 4A squads — No. 10 Boone and No. 12 Adel-Desoto-Minburn — on Saturday.

“Playing this good competition will help us get ready for tournament time,” North Polk second baseman Ellie Owen said. “We’re getting quality at-bats against quality pitchers.”

North Polk upset Perry by a 4-1 score in its first game of the tournament. The Comets scored twice in both the second and sixth innings and the only run they allowed was a solo homer by Perry’s Johanna Diw in the seventh inning.

Owen doubled twice, Paige Sandberg was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Sydney Anderson was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace North Polk offensively against Perry. Hannah Foster went 2-for-3 with two runs and Carolyn Steffen walked, scored and drove in a run.

Sophie Swygman was the winning pitcher. Swygman gave up just the one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

North Polk whipped Madrid by an 8-1 decision in four innings. A six-run second inning was the difference-maker in the victory.

Owen had a big game with the stick against Madrid. She went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and three RBI.

Sandberg also turned in another strong hitting outing. She was with a double and a run.

Rebecca Rimathe smacked a solo home run, Trisha Sporra went 1-for-3 with a run and Olivia Patterson chipped in a single and an RBI against Madrid. Anderson walked, scored and drove in a run and Foster and Hailey Steffen both walked and scored.

Bailey Hougham earned the win against Madrid. Hougham struck out four and walked two and she didn’t allow a hit, going all four innings.

On Saturday, North Polk opened with a tough 2-1 loss to Boone in eight innings. The Comets scored once in their half of the eighth and Boone put up two runs on a homer by Dianna Slight.

Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sporra, Rimathe and Swygman each singled once and courtesy runner Jenna Fagen scored the lone Comet run.

Swygman threw all eight innings and gave up four hits with two walks in a losing effort versus the Toreadors. Emma Dighton finished with three strikeouts and no walks in eight innings to get the win for Boone and she also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

North Polk wrapped up the Kiwanis Invitational with a 9-2 loss to ADM. The Comets hung tough early, then struggled late against a potent Tiger offense that pounded out 14 hits.

“We can’t let this loss affect (us),” Owen said. “We’ve got to fix it and flush it.”

Owen wrapped up a big tournament at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs versus ADM. She was 8-for-16 with three doubles, one triple, four runs and three RBI in the four games.

“I had a rough week last week, so I just tried to practice more and get to these games,” Owen said. “It worked out.”

Anderson was 6-for-11 with two doubles, one run, three RBI and a walk over the four games. She also played well defensively, both in the outfield and at catcher, and provided a lot of verbal support in the dugout.

“My main thing when I play for a team is I want to keep them up, whether it’s talking, getting a hit or just making a great catch and throwing,” Anderson said. “You are always cheering and talking, just to keep your team up.”

North Polk concluded the Kiwanis Invitational with a 13-8 overall record.
