STATE CENTER - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team split two games at the West Marshall Invitational Saturday in State Center.

The Raiders whipped Grundy Center by a 16-6 score in six innings and came up short by a 4-1 margin against West Marshall, going to 3-12 on the season.

CMB took advantage of a huge fourth inning to down Grundy Center. The Raiders led 5-4 going into the fourth, where they put up an impressive seven runs to break the game open.

Brady Kemp was 2-for-5 with a double, four runs, two steals and three RBI and Derrick Klemme went 2-for-4 with a run, steal and two RBI for CMB in the win. Travis Lindemoen finished 2-for-5 with three steals and runs apiece; Tucker Maxwell singled, walked, stole two bases, scored and drove in a run and Brady Ross was 1-for-4 with a walk, steal and three runs.

Andrew Esqueda finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI; Cole Damman was 1-for-4 with an a steal and an RBI and Ian Thomson scored and drove in a run. Bryce Bacon walked twice, scored two times and stole three bases.

Thomson was the winning pitcher. He gave up three earned runs on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five innings.

Adam Smith gave up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in one inning of work.

CMB was unable to overcome a rocky first inning in the loss to West Marshall. The Trojans scored all four of their runs in the opening frame and held on, despite strong pitching from the Raiders’ Carter Nelsen.

Nelsen gave up four earned runs on six hits with four walks and one strikeout in six innings. Maxwell was 2-for-3 with a run, Kemp doubled, Smith singled and Thomson walked for the only Raider offense.

Chandler Sponseller allowed one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings to get the victory for West Marshall. Cody Mead doubled, scored and drove in two runs; Sponseller doubled and knocked in one run and Ross Randall also smacked a two-bagger for the Trojans.

COLLINS - A lack of punch at the plate hurt Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in a 5-1 Heart of Iowa Conference loss to Roland-Story Friday in Collins.

The Raiders only recorded two hits, falling to 2-9 in the HOIC.

Roland-Story scored three runs in the first inning and one in the top of the second. CMB put up a run in the bottom of the second, but failed to add to that total as the Norsemen cruised to victory.

Brady Kemp singled, stole a base and scored CMB’s only run. Derrick Klemme walked and singled, Travis Lindemoen walked and stole a base, Creighton Caple swiped one base and Tucker Maxwell, Carter Nelsen, Adam Smith and Ian Thomson each drew one walk.

Caple was the losing pitcher after giving up four runs — three earned — on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings. Derrick Klemme allowed one run on one hit with one walk in three innings.

Jacob Pittman struck out seven and walked four in five innings as the winning Roland-Story pitcher. Zach Shadlow homered and drove in two runs, and Nathan Bell smacked a solo home run for the Norsemen.

JEFFERSON - The offense came on late for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a hot Greene County team in a 16-9 loss to the Rams June 14 in Jefferson.

CMB scored six runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. But by that time, Greene County had already built a 9-2 lead and the Raiders failed to slow down the Rams over the final two frames as they matched CMB’s seven runs during that span to put the game away.

Creighton Caple was 2-for-4 with a run and a steal, Tucker Maxwell doubled, walked twice, scored and drove in two runs and Brady Kemp doubled, walked and scored twice for CMB at the plate. Travis Lindemoen was 1-for-3 with two walks, a steal and a run; Brady Ross singled and scored; Cole Damman walked three times, scored and drove in a run; Derrick Klemme tallied one walk, run and RBI apiece and Bryce Bacon was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Lindemoen allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings as the losing pitcher. Carter Nelsen surrendered two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in 1 ⅔ innings and Maxwell allowed two earned runs in ⅔ of an inning.

Bryce Hoyle allowed four earned runs with seven strikeouts and six walks in 4 ⅓ innings as the victorious pitcher for Greene County. Trey Tucker doubled, tripled and drove in four runs and Austin Delp ended up 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for the Rams on offense.

NEVADA - A bad bottom of the fifth inning doomed Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in an 11-1 loss to Nevada in six innings June 13 at Billy Sunday Field in Nevada.

The Raiders only trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Then Nevada busted out for seven runs and CMB had no answers over the final two innings.

Brady Kemp allowed eight unearned runs with three strikeouts and one walk in 4 ⅔ innings and was the losing pitcher. Bryce Bacon gave up two runs on three walks and Cole Damman allowed one run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Kemp doubled and drove in Travis Lindemoen with CMB’s only run. Lindemoen walked and Damman, Tucker Maxwell and Brady Ross each chipped in one single for the Raiders.

Tyler Shafer struck out 10 in five innings as the winning Nevada pitcher and he also collected two hits, including a double, and one RBI at the plate. Cam Shill, Macade Matuska and Bronzon Mason each drove in two runs for the Cubs.
