COLLINS - Collins-Maxwell-Baxter started strong and held on for a 7-4 victory over North Polk in a Heart of Iowa Conference softball game between the two schools June 5 in Collins.
CMB put up six runs over the first two innings. A two-run first and four-run second gave the Raiders a 6-1 advantage.
Another run in the fifth pushed CMB’s lead to six runs. The Comets cut the lead in half in the sixth, but could do no damage in the seventh, falling to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the HOIC.
CMB improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the HOIC. Mikayla Houge gave up four earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher, and Abbey Kahler doubled and knocked in three runs at the plate for the Raiders.
Megan Ritter walked twice, stole three bases and scored three times and Katie Camp walked and scored two times apiece. Houge was 2-for-2 with two RBI; Hannah Caple went 2-for-3 with a double; Mikayla Eslinger doubled and drove in a run and Holly Jessen singled, stole a base and scored for the Raiders.
All four North Polk runs came as a result of the long ball. Sophie Swygman hit a solo home run in the second inning and Rebecca Rimathe connected for a three-run bomb in the sixth.
Rimathe and Swygman were responsible for all four Comet hits as they each went 2-for-3. Jenna Fagen walked and scored, Trisha Sporra scored one run and Sydney Anderson picked up one free pass for the Comets.
Swygman was the losing pitcher. She allowed just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks in six innings.
