SLATER - The Ballard baseball team turned in its second strong performance in a row with an 11-0 victory over non-conference rival Nevada in five innings Tuesday at Nite Hawk Field.
Bomber pitcher Gannon Manfull tossed a three-hitter and Ballard connected for three doubles on offense in following up an 8-2 victory over Adel-Desoto-Minburn on Monday. Ballard has now won four of its last six games following a six-game losing skid to put its season record at 6-9.
“We’re not focusing on mistakes,” Manfull said. “We’re just picking each other up. Don’t worry about what you did wrong - focus on the next play.”
Ballard did very little wrong on Tuesday. The Bombers had no errors to back up Manfull’s strong pitching and seven different players drove in one run.
Clayton Poots was the catalyst on offense for Ballard.
Poots hit a two-run single with two outs to spark a four-run second inning to get the ball rolling. In the third inning he added an RBI double to center field, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate on the night.
“That first hit with two outs - all I had to do was put it in play and get at least one guy in so we can get on the board,” Poots said. “We just got everything fired up right after I did that. Everyone was going crazy.”
Jack Luster went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Kade Reinertson finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Austin Edwards went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Reece Huen ended up 1-for-2 with two runs.
“We’re focusing a lot on BP now,” Poots said. “We’re getting good quality cuts so we’re hitting the ball like we want to.”
The Bombers provided more than enough support for Manfull. Manfull struck out six batters and walked only one on the night.
“I was just hitting my spots,” Manfull said. “(My) change-up’s good - curve ball’s good.”
Nevada fell to 7-4 with the loss. Jack Higgins was the losing pitcher after giving up four runs - two earned - on three hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in two innings of work.
Trent Stahl, Macade Matuska and Kyle Bauman each singled once for Nevada. Thomas Crawford drew one walk for the Cubs.
