ALLEMAN - The North Polk softball team picked up one win and suffered two losses to quality opponents at the Comet Invitational Friday and Saturday in Alleman.


North Polk, rated No. 12 in Class 3A, topped East Marshall by a 3-0 score Friday. The Comets scored one run in the second inning and two in the fifth.


North Polk compiled nine hits and pitcher Sophie Swygman tossed a three-hitter. Ellie Owen was 3-for-4 with a double and a run, Paige Sandberg went 2-for-2 with a double, walk and RBI and Carolyn Steffen tripled and drove in two runs to pace the Comet attack.


Sydney Anderson went 2-for-3 with a run, Rebecca Rimathe singled and Trisha Sporra walked and scored.


Swygman tossed a five-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.


On Saturday, North Polk fell to Des Moines Roosevelt by a 6-4 score and Des Moines Christian by an 8-3 margin in six innings. The Comets concluded the tournament with a 7-3 record.


In the loss to Des Moines Roosevelt, North Polk took a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Roughriders plated two runs in the third and four in the fifth and North Polk mustered only one run over the final five innings.


Owen smacked two doubles, walked and scored a run and Steffen was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for North Polk in the loss. Sporra went 1-for-2 with a run; Bailey Hougham singled and drove in a run; Jenna Fagen went 1-for-3 with a steal; Sandberg knocked in a run and Rio Monk and Taylor Adams each scored once.


Swygman gave up six unearned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in seven innings to take the loss. Nani Hill allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts in four innings to get the win in relief for Roosevelt.


Sydney Conrad drove in two runs and Hill was 3-for-4 with a steal and a run for the Roughriders on offense.


North Polk was held to four hits in the loss to Des Moines Christian. The Comets scored one run apiece in the second, third and fourth innings and they gave up two apiece in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames.


Sporra and Rimathe both singled and drove in a run and Steffen singled, stole a base and scored versus Des Moines Christian. Fagen singled, walked, scored and stole two bases and Anderson stole a base and scored.


Hougham allowed four runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in two innings to take the loss. Swygman gave up four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work.


Emma Wilson gave up two earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts in six innings to get the win for Des Moines Christian. Beth Zimmer was 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Lions at the plate.

ALLEMAN - North Polk used a potent hitting attack to whip Roland-Story, 11-1 in five innings May 31 in Alleman.


The Comets connected for 13 hits in the game, including four extra-base knocks. They scored five runs over the first three innings, erupted for five more scores in the fourth, then countered a Roland-Story run in the top of the fifth with a score in the bottom of the inning to end the game early.


Carolyn Steffen went 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and four RBI and Sydney Anderson went deep once and ended up 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Comets. Ellie Owen finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, Rebecca Rimathe ended up 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs and two RBI, Maddy Hill singled, walked and scored and Sophie Swygman doubled once.


Olivia Patterson went 1-for-1 with two runs and Trisha Sporra added a single and a score for North Polk. Swygman was the winning pitcher after giving up one unearned run on just one hit with no walks and one strikeout in five innings.


The victory put North Polk at 5-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.


Sydney Mathis surrendered eight earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks in 4 ⅔ innings to take the loss for Roland-Story. Jenna Clark singled and scored for the Norse on offense.

ALLEMAN - North Polk started strong and withstood a late Gilbert charge to knock off the Tigers, 9-6, May 30 in Alleman.


The Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Through five frames, North Polk held a 9-2 advantage.


Gilbert plated four runs in the sixth. But Sophie Swygman blanked the Tigers in the seventh to put a halt to their comeback attempt.


Rebecca Rimathe went 2-for-3 with a double, steal, walk and run and Paige Sandberg was 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI to lead North Polk on offense. Ellie Owen doubled and had one walk, steal, run and RBI apiece; Carolyn Steffen was 1-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI; Sydney Anderson went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI; Maddy Hill singled, walked and scored and Swygman added one hit.


Bailey Hougham threw 2 ⅓ hitless innings and gave up one run on five walks as the winning pitcher. Swygman allowed five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 4 ⅔ innings of relief.


Taylor Larimore walked 10 and struck out two in six innings as the losing Tiger pitcher. Jordyn Pike tripled and drove in three runs for Gilbert at the plate.
