HUXLEY — North Polk downed Ballard in a non-conference rivalry softball game, 4-2, in a shortened five-inning affair at Huxley Saturday.
The game was the only one played in a triangular with the two teams and Lynnville-Sully due to inclement weather. Ballard jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but North Polk scored three times in the third and once in the fourth to take control.
Ballard was held to one run over the final four innings by Comet hurler Sophie Swygman. The Bombers finished with eight hits in a losing effort, and North Polk prevailed despite picking up only three base knocks.
Swygman allowed one earned run with two strikeouts and one walk in five innings to get the victory. Carolyn Steffen came up with the big blow on offense for North Polk with a three-run homer in the third.
Trisha Sporra and Sydney Anderson both singled and scored, Ellie Owen walked and scored and Maddy Hill drove in a run for the Comets, who improved to 4-1.
Ballard fell to 3-2. Abby Carlin gave up four runs — just one earned — with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings to take the loss.
Karlee Ahrenholtz was 2-for-2 and Carlin went 2-for-3 at the plate for Ballard. Skylar Rigby singled, walked, stole a base and scored; Rachel Newell singled and scored; Isabell Hobbs went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Maggie Larson singled once for the Bombers.
