ALLEMAN — The North Polk baseball team earned an exciting 3-2 victory over Class 4A power Urbandale Friday at Alleman.

Ben Rupe was the hero for the Comets. Rupe drove the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, scoring Adam Moxley to end the game.

The game quickly turned things back in the right direction for North Polk. The Comets opened the season 2-0, then fell to Heart of Iowa Conference rival Nevada by a 5-3 score the night prior to the Urbandale game.

“After the Nevada game, we left the ballpark knowing that we really didn’t give our best effort,” North Polk head baseball coach Dave Middleton said. “During the Urbandale game we were a different team. We scored in the seventh just by battling and playing 90-feet baseball. (Adam) Moxley, (Mason) Russell, (Dawson) Deitch and Rupe all had great at-bats. When you put four good at-bats together in a row, good things happen.”

The Comets scored their first two runs in the first inning. Urbandale answered with two runs in the second, then neither team could push a run across until Rupe’s clutch hit.

Jake Johnson threw ⅔ of a scoreless inning in relief to get the win. Matthew Antle tossed the first 6 ⅓ innings and gave up two runs on just two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Antle and Johnson managed to overcome four North Polk errors to get past Urbandale.

Colten Parkins ended up with an RBI double for North Polk on offense. Johnson also knocked in one run.

Troncin was the losing pitcher for Urbandale. Brock Skoog gave up one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts in 6 ⅓ innings as the Jayhawk starting pitcher.

The victory put North Polk at 3-1 on the season. Urbandale fell to 4-1.
