JEFFERSON - A huge third inning sparked a decisive 13-2 victory for the North Polk softball team over Greene County Friday at Jefferson.


The Comets erupted for seven runs in the top of the third to break a scoreless tie. They went up 9-0 after four innings, gave up two runs in the fifth, then put on the finishing touches with a four-run seventh.


Ellie Owen collected three hits, and Trisha Sporra and Rebecca Rimathe each added two to pace an explosive 13-hit attack by North Polk.


Owen doubled, walked, stole a base and scored three times. Sporra tripled, stole a base, scored three times and drove in two runs and Rimathe homered and picked up two runs and RBI apiece.


Bailey Hougham allowed two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings to pick up the victory on the mound. Sophie Swygman threw the other two innings and didn’t allow a run on two hits for the Comets.


The victory put North Polk at 3-0 in the Heart of Iowa Conference and 3-1 overall.

NEVADA - North Polk took advantage of a hot start and a pair of home runs to dispose of Nevada, 16-3, in six innings May 25 at Nevada.


The Comets jumped all over Nevada early. They scored six runs in the first inning and by the top of the fourth inning, their lead was a commanding 11-0.


Nevada came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. But North Polk plated a run in the fifth, then added a four-run outburst in the sixth to end the game early.


“It was awesome to come out strong,” North Polk right fielder Maddy Hill said. “It was a team win. Everyone who (hadn’t got a hit so far) got their first hit tonight. It was just awesome to see that.”


The Comets ended up with 13 hits.


Hill is currently splitting time between two sports. She also part of the No. 2 North Polk girls’ soccer team.


She had a breakout game in softball against Nevada. Hill belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth and she finished 2-for-4 with four RBI


Rebecca Rimathe also hit a two-run homer in the top of the second. She went 2-for-3 with four runs, a walk and two RBI.


Carolyn Steffen finished 2-for-3 with three runs, one steal and a walk. Trisha Sporrer was 2-for-3 with a run, walk, steal and RBI apiece and Cali Capaldo doubled and scored a run.


Sophie Swygman was the winning pitcher. The fourth inning was Swygman’s only rough stretch, as she tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk.


“My fastball inside and my drop-ball and my rise were working,” Swygman said. “I’m pretty happy.”


Mackenzie Garrett allowed 11 earned runs with one strikeout and walk apiece in five innings to take the loss for Nevada. Garrett also hit a two-run homer in the Cub half of the fourth and Grace Francis doubled, scored and drove in a run for the Cubs.

ALLEMAN - North Polk couldn’t find any offense after the first inning against Perry in a 4-2 loss to the Bluejays May 23 in Alleman.


The Comets, rated No. 12 in Class 3A, got a two-run homer from Carolyn Steffen in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. But they had no success against Perry hurler Emma Olejniczak from the second inning on, finishing with just two hits against a Bluejay squad rated No. 5 in 4A.


Ellie Owen singled and scored in the first inning for the only other North Polk hit off Olejniczak. Paige Sandberg drew one walk for the Comets.


Bailey Hougham gave up all four Perry runs — three earned — on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 5 ⅓ innings to take the loss. Sophie Swygman threw 1 ⅔ scoreless innings and gave up two hits for the Comets.


Ojeniczak ended the game with nine strikeouts, going the full seven innings to get the win. Gabby West drove in three runs and Brooke Huntington went 2-for-3 with a double for Perry.

JEWELL - The season opened in dramatic fashion for a North Polk team rated No. 12 in Class 3A.


The Comets took on Heart of Iowa Conference rival South Hamilton and overcame a 6-0 deficit to stun the Hawks, 7-6 at Jewell.


North Polk scored all seven of its runs over the final two innings to steal a victory from South Hamilton. The Comets cut a 6-0 deficit in half in the top of the sixth, then plated four more runs in the seventh to move in front.


Comet pitcher Sophie Swygman shut down the Hawks in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback.


Carolyn Steffen was 3-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBI to pace North Polk on offense. Ellie Owen doubled twice, scored two runs and drove in one and eighth-grader Sydney Anderson homered and drove in two runs.


Rebecca Rimathe went 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece, Trisha Sporrer was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, Bailey Hougham doubled and Jenna Fagen scored one run for the Comets.


Swygman allowed four earned runs on eight hits, going the distance on the mound. She struck out 10 batters and only walked two.


Ady Wintermote doubled, homered and drove in four runs for South Hamilton. Breanne Diersen doubled twice and scored a run and Alissa Moss was 2-for-4 with two runs for the Hawks.


Taylor Volkmann struck out six and walked one in seven innings to take the loss for South Hamilton.
