ROLAND — No. 1 (Class 2A) Collins-Maxwell-Baxter bounced back from its first loss to claim a 3-1 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Roland-Story Friday in Roland.

The Raiders plated all three of their runs in the third inning. Dominant pitching from Mikayla Houge and strong defense took care of the rest as CMB recovered from a loss to an Oskaloosa team rated No. 1 in 4A to raise its season record to 2-1.

Houge gave up six hits and two walks and she struck out seven, going the distance to earn the victory. She also went 2-for-3 with one RBI at the plate.

Mikayla Eslinger was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI and Megan Ritter doubled and scored for the Raiders. Abbey Kahler, Hannah Caple, Heather Jessen and Jordynn Wesselink each chipped in one single and Abby Husak scored one run.

COLLINS — Collins-Maxwell-Baxter was overwhelmed by the explosive hitting of Oskaloosa in a battle of two top-ranked teams May 25 in Collins.

The Raiders, rated No. 1 in Class 2A, surrendered 14 hits in a 12-2 loss to a Wildcat squad ranked No. 1 in 4A.

CMB was still in the game after five innings. The Raiders trailed 5-2 after scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth and giving up one run in the third, three in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Oskaloosa broke the game open in the sixth with a six-run outburst.

Abbey Kahler was the losing CMB pitcher. She allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven with one walk.

Hannah Caple was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Megan Ritter doubled and scored for the Raiders on offense. Kahler went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Holly Jessen collected one single and Mikayla Houge walked and scored.

Ava Vande Wall went 4-for-5 with two doubles, runs and RBI apiece for Oskaloosa. Alexis Westercamp and Josie Bunnell each drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

Alexis Groet was the winning Oskaloosa pitcher. Groet struck out nine and only walked one batter.

COLLINS — Collins-Maxwell-Baxter found out it was going to have to fight every night to maintain its No. 1 ranking in Class 2A after holding off Greene County in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel May 24 at Greene County.

After its season opener versus Nevada two nights earlier was suspended due to inclement weather, CMB was a little flat offensively against Greene County. The Raiders collected only three hits versus Ram pitchers Hannah Promes and Jenna Beyers.

Katie Camp singled, stole a base and scored in the first inning to account for the game’s only run. Mikayla Houge singled twice for CMB’s other hits and she also walked once.

Abbey Kahler, Mikayla Eslinger, Hannah Caple and Heather Jessen each drew one walk for CMB.

Houge was the winning pitcher. She struck out 13 batters and walked only two, working around eight Greene County hits to get the shutout.

Hannah Promes went 2-for-4 with a double and Megan Durbin was 2-for-4 with a steal to pace Greene County on offense. Promes was the losing pitcher after giving up one unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
