SLATER — A bad night with the stick doomed the Ballard baseball team against Ames May 25 at Night Hawk Field in Slater.


Ballard only mustered four hits in a 6-0 loss to the Little Cyclones.


Jack Luster, Taylor Roberts, Gannon Manfull and Cody Ihle each singled once for the Bombers. Manfull, Codey Erickson and Tanner Brock each drew one walk.


Colin Anderson was the losing pitcher. Anderson threw well in defeat, allowing two earned runs on six hits, with 10 strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work.


Hersch Maxey gave up three runs on two hits with one walk in 1 1/3 innings for Ballard. Taylor Roberts added a scoreless ⅔ of an inning with one strikeout.


The loss put Ballard at 2-2 on the season.

SLATER — The strong arm of Jack Luster and timely early hits gave Ballard a 6-1 non-conference victory over Ogden May 24 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.


Luster retired the first 13 batters he faced. He ended up going the distance and throwing a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and only two walks.


“I was really hitting my spots,” Luster said. “My curve ball was good. Kade (Reinertson) behind the plate was sitting on the corners and all around I was hitting my spots.”


Ogden’s only run came in the top of the sixth inning, when Wes Clausen doubled and scored on an error.


Ballard put up one run in the first inning and took charge in the third with a three-run surge. The Bombers tacked on two more runs in the fifth to give Luster a comfortable cushion.


Second baseman Gannon Manfull provided the biggest spark on offense for Ballard.


Manfull doubled twice and finished 3-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece. Manfull singled in Ballard’s first run in the opening frame, and in the bottom of the fifth, he hit a leadoff double and eventually scored to help close out the Bulldogs.


“I’d been struggling at the plate, but I just felt pretty good about it because I came in and got good work in before about two hours early,” Manfull said. “I hit a bunch off the tee and it felt good.”


Reece Huen went 2-for-2 with a walk, steal and two RBI for Ballard. Luster was 2-for-4, Taylor Roberts singled, walked and scored; Codey Erickson recorded two walks and runs apiece and Isaac Schafbuch stole two bases and scored once.


Ballard finished with eight hits. The Bombers also drew five walks and stole three bases as a team.


“We’re just trying to put people in spots that they can contribute this first week,” Manfull said. “So far it’s working.”


In the field Ballard was solid, finishing with just one error.


Tyler Free gave up six runs — just one earned — with five walks and four strikeouts in four innings to take the loss for Ogden. Clausen finished 1-for-3 with an RBI as the top hitter for the Bulldogs.

DES MOINES— A potent Saydel hitting attack was too much for Ballard May 23 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.


The Bombers gave up 16 hits in an 11-3 loss to the Eagles.


Saydel scored six runs over the first two innings. Ballard eventually pulled within 7-3 after scoring once in the fourth and two times in the sixth, but Saydel countered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.


Austin Edwards, doubled, walked, scored and drove in a run for Ballard. Codey Erickson was 3-for-3 with a steal, Taylor Roberts scored twice, Jack Luster and Cody Ihle each picked up one hit and Gannon Manfull drove in a run.


Manfull was the losing pitcher. He threw all six innings and gave up eight earned runs with no walks.


Brandon Reese allowed one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings to get the win for Saydel. Devin Porter was 4-for-4 with a double, homer, four runs and two RBI and Craig Garrison went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI for the Eagles on offense.

SLATER — Ballard started strong on offense and received great pitching from Austin Edwards in a 7-2 victory over Dallas Center-Grimes to open the season May 22 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.


Ballard scored one run in each of the first three innings to take command. DCG pulled within 3-2 in the top of the sixth, but the Bombers countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away.


Edwards gave up two unearned runs on just one hit with 10 strikeouts and two walks in six innings to get the victory. Taylor Roberts threw a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.


At the plate Ballard totaled 10 hits — all singles. The Bombers also drew 11 walks and picked up an impressive eight steals on the base paths.


Roberts, Tanner Brock, Gannon Manfull and Isaac Schafbuch each collected two hits for Ballard. Roberts added a walk, run and two steals; Brock walked, stole a base and drove in a run; Manfull walked, stole a base and scored twice and Schafbuch swiped two bases and scored once.


Clayton Poots went 1-for-1 with two walks, one run and two RBI. Jack Luster added a single, Codey Erickson stole two bases and scored once, Cody Ihle walked twice and drove in a run, Edwards walked four times and Kade Reinertson scored once.
