DES MOINES - Ballard had two individuals place in the top 15 and North Polk produced one personal record in the Class 3A boys’ competition at the state coed track meet last Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.
Ballard’s Hunter Wright placed 11th in the 3A boys’ 100-meter dash. Bomber freshman Noah Kohut-Jackson also had productive state meet in his first appearance by taking 14th in the 3,200.
Wright finished Thursday’s 3A prelims of the boys’ 100 in 11.30 seconds. West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Isaiah Trousil went on to win the event with a record time of :10.74 during Saturday’s finals.
Wright also ran in the 200 prelims Thursday, placing 22nd in :23.60. Trousil again won this event on Saturday with another record performance, crossing the finish line in :21.22.
Kohut-Jackson got caught in the rear of the pack at the start of the 3,200 on Thursday. But he showed great determination by working his way up to 14th, finishing in 9:58.99.
Marion’s Myles Bach won the 3A boys’ 3,200 in 9:28.56.
Sam Upah ran in the 110 high hurdles prelims on Friday. He finished 16th with a time of :15.78.
Boone’s Lantz Reed won the 3A 110 highs with a :14.68 showing during Saturday’s finals.
Taylor Roberts and Skyler Noftsger both competed in a field event for Ballard at state. Roberts took 16th in the high jump Thursday after clearing six feet even and Noftsger came in 22nd in the long jump on Friday with a jump of 19-4.25.
Marion’s Blair Brooks won both events after clearing 6-7 in the high jump and peaking at 22-7.5 in the long jump.
Ballard’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Upah, Roberts, Nic Edwards and Isaac Schafbuch also competed at state on Thursday. But the Bomber team was disqualified.
“(I’m) proud of the efforts of the guys in all seven events,” Ballard head boys’ track coach Al Christian said. “They worked hard and improved all season. They represented Ballard well. Thank you to the four seniors for their contributions to the program.”
Quinten Sommers had North Polk’s best showing at state. Sommers came in 16th in the 3A boys’ 400 low hurdles Friday with a time of :57.57.
“Quinten Sommers continues to impress for a sophomore,” North Polk head boys’ track coach Bill Capaldo said. “He set a season best time and a personal record.”
Carlisle’s Dallas Wright won the event in :53.20.
Senior Wes Lesher placed 18th in the 800 on Saturday for the Comets. He completed the race in 2:03.83.
“Lesher ran a smart race in the 800 on Saturday,” Capaldo said. “The first 400 was great — he came around in 57 seconds, which is what we planned. Then at about the 580 mark he got clipped on the heel, lost his rhythm, ended up being boxed in and just couldn’t get recovered. (He) still ran 2:03.83, which is what we expect from him night in and night out, but I know he wanted more. He had nothing to prove — he’s a three-time state qualifier, medal winner and great leader for our program.”
Iowa Falls-Alden’s Landon Boomsma won the open 800 in 3A with a 1:55.96 showing.
Lesher also partook in the 4 X 800 relay on Thursday. John Peterson, Flint Vernon and Will McCormick joined Lesher to produce a time of 8:37.36 and place 23th.
“Thursday’s 4 X 800 wasn’t exactly how we wanted finish, but our guys gave everything they had and that’s all we can ask for,” Capaldo said. “We got some valuable experience with a couple of those guys. We’re going to lose two good seniors in Wes Lesher and Peterson; they have been fantastic for our program the last four years. They will be missed greatly!”
Mount Vernon took first in the 3A boys 4 X 800 after clocking in at 7:58.92.
Marion won the 3A boys’ team title with 69 points. Mount Vernon came in second with a score of 58.
