NORWALK - Ballard is sending two individuals to the 1A state singles girls’ tennis tournament after producing the top two singles finishers at the 1A singles and doubles regional tournament at Norwalk May 18.

Bry Ronca and Kate Rietz went first and second respectively in singles play to advance to state.

Ronca opened by sweeping North Polk’s Grace Nelson, 6-1 and 6-0. She then ousted Chariton’s Avelina Popkov, 6-0 and 6-1.

In the semifinals, Ronca downed Norwalk’s Emma Tollefson, 6-2 and 6-0. According to Ballard head girls’ tennis coach Jen Dovre, Ronca used a good shot variety and consistent ground strokes to top Tollefson.

Rietz blanked Audubon’s Amber Campbell with a pair of 6-0 victories in her first match, and followed that up with 6-1 and 6-0 wins over Clarke’s Brittney Beckett. In the semifinals, Rietz rebounded from an early 2-1 deficit in her match with Kuemper Catholic’s Madie Eischeid to take the first set by a 6-2 score.

Dovre said Rietz played patient and controlled tennis to rally past Eischeid. In the second set, Rietz dominated by a 6-1 score to claim victory and advance to the finals.

In the championship match, Ronca prevailed over Rietz by scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Doubles play at Norwalk saw Ballard’s doubles team of Lindsey Kaldenberg and Sarah Kamp rally from a 6-4 loss in their opening set against a Saydel team to take the match after scoring back-to-back 6-4 victories. In the second round, the Bomber duo defeated a team from Norwalk, again rallying from an opening set loss.

Kaldenberg and Kamp came back from a 6-1 loss to take the next two sets with a pair of 6-4 triumphs to win the match and advance to the semifinals, where Kaldenberg and Kamp were swept by the No.1-seeded team from Clarke with a pair of 6-1 setbacks.

Kaldenberg and Kamp suffered two more 6-1 losses to a team from Kuemper Catholic in the third-place match.
