ALLEMAN - The Ballard boys’ tennis team came up short against Atlantic in the Class 1A preliminary substate round Saturday in Alleman.


The Bombers suffered their only loss of the season by a 5-1 score to finish 9-1. The match was called at the end of singles play after Atlantic reached the number of victories needed to clinch the meet.


Ballard’s only win came in the No. 3 singles match. Caleb Hamerlinck defeated Atlantic’s Luke Hohenberger by scores of 6-2 and 6-3.


Nick Matthews put up a great fight in the No. 5 singles match for Ballard. Going up against Atlantic’s Kaleb Flory, Matthews won the first set by a 6-4 score, but lost the next two by 6-2 and 6-4 margins.
