NEWTON - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ track team placed second overall and the Raider boys won one event and took second in two more at the Cardinal Relays in Newton May 4.


The CMB girls won three events and placed second six times, scoring 130 points. Prairie City-Monroe claimed the girls’ title with 155 points and Newton was second out of three teams with 88.5.


Sailor Hinegardner won the girls’ long jump for CMB with a jump of 16 feet, 1.5 inches. That beat the 15-6 effort by PCM’s Alexis Kuecker for the gold.


Hinegardner also anchored the CMB girls to a win in the 4 X 100-meter relay. Rachel Kenney, Brianda Bane and Megan Ritter ran the first three legs as the Raiders finished in 53.27 seconds to top Lynnville-Sully’s :54.03 for first.


Brianda Bane, Josie Wierson, Piper Larson and Lauren Ratliff gave CMB a win in the distance medley relay. The Raider team ran a 4:35.91 to top the 4:39.67 showing by PCM for first.


Hinegardner ran a runner-up time of :16.90 in the 100 hurdles and Heather Jessen and Brenna Thomson took second and third in the 3,000 for CMB with respective times of 11:47.91 and 11:50.78.


The Raider 4 X 200 team of Trinity Stover, Shasta Moody, Emily Nation and Josie Wierson earned a silver medal in 1:56.91. Gracie Cheville, Nation, Abby Husak and Larson placed second in the 4 X 400 with a 4:35.89 showing.


Kenney, Ritter, Stover and Nation placed runner-up in the sprint medley with a time of 2:03.28. Mary Schabilion, Avery Backus, Kaylin Van Ryswyk and Amber Weltha picked up a silver in the 4 X 100 weight person’s relay with a time of 1:01.94.


Van Ryswyk stepped up to earn a bronze medal in both the shot put and discus for CMB with respective throws of 33-7.5 and 108-8. Ratliff was third in the 1,500 with a time of 5:19.57 and the Raider 4 X 800 team of Ashlee Johnson, Holly Jessen, Olivia Pasquariello and Mikayla Houge ran an 11:07.08 to earn a bronze.


In the boys’ competition, CMB scored 89 points to come in fourth behind Newton (150), Lynnville-Sully (105) and PCM (102). The Raider boys compiled eight medals with one gold, two silver and five bronze medals.


Will Clapper and Brady Kemp went first and third in the boys’ shot put for CMB. Clapper’s winning throw was 50-6, Kemp peaked at 48-7 and Newton’s Landon Hansen finished between them with a toss of 49-3.


Ian Thomson and Logan Berg went second and third in the 3,200 and Berg was also runner-up in the 1,600.


Thomson completed the 3,200 in 11:01.87 and Berg ran an 11:10.47 as they came in behind only the outstanding 10:19.64 effort by PCM’s Chris Ellens. In the 1,600, Berg ran a 5:06.96 to finish behind Ellens’ 4:50.57.


Carter Fricke won a bronze in both the 100 and 200 for the Raider boys. Fricke finished the 100 in :11.63 and the 200 in :23.79.


John Newton, Marcus Mitchell, Ben Huff and Noah Rhoades gave CMB a bronze medal in the distance medley relay. The Raider quartet clocked in at 4:04.78.
