ALLEMAN - The North Polk girls won seven events and the Comet boys picked up two gold medals at the Comet Invitational track meet May 4 in Alleman.


The North Polk girls placed first in four individual events and three relays. They scored 125 points to place second out of seven teams behind Gilbert’s score of 141.


Maria Gorham took first in two events and Emily Patterson and Amelia Lesher each won a distance running event for the Comet girls.


In the high jump Gorham continued her exciting battle with defending Class 3A state champion Megan Durbin of Greene County. Gorham, the 2017 Drake Relays champion in the event, and Durbin both jumped five feet, six inches at the Comet Invitational, with Gorham prevailing after needing fewer attempts to clear the bar.


Gorham also defeated Durbin to win the 200-meter dash. Gorham crossed the finish line in 26.76 seconds to easily top Durbin’s time of :27.82.


Patterson and Sophie Schaffer gave North Polk the top two runners in the 3,000. Patterson won in 12:00.68 and Schaffer took the silver in 12:51.95.


Lesher earned a gold medal in the 800 with a time of 2:25.46. Gilbert’s Cara Heuer was second in 2:31.20 and the Comets’ Grace Croat placed third in 2:36.74.


The North Polk girls also won the sprint medley, 4 X 800 and 4 X 400 relays.


Gorham joined up with Jenna Fagen, Macy Gill and Eva Schoenberg to win the sprint medley in 1:57.44. Gilbert came in second at 2:00.54.


Croat teamed with Ellie Owen, Abby McCloud and Olivia Patterson to win the 4 X 800 in 10:20.17. Gilbert was runner-up in 10:29.39.


Schoenberg, Sierra Lambert, Kennedy Wendel and Sophie Blanchard took first in the 4 X 400 for North Polk with a time of 4:22.44. The Comets again beat Gilbert for first as the Tigers finished in 4:24.11.


The Comet 4 X 200 team of Kassidee Golwitzer, Callie Haupert, Taylor Adams and Schoenberg placed second in 1:53.67. Greene County came in just ahead of North Polk with a time of 1:53.13.


In the boys’ competition North Polk scored 91 points to place third out of eight teams. Madrid won the boys’ crown with 144 points and Norwalk tallied a score of 127 to place second.


The North Polk boys won the distance medley relay. The Comets also received an individual gold from Quinten Sommers in the 400 low hurdles.


Reid Summers, Sutton Sears, Grant Croat and Wes Lesher won the boys’ distance medley in 3:56.73. Norwalk came in second with a time of 3:58.21.


Sommers completed the 400 lows in :58.18. He blew away the rest of the competition, with Norwalk’s Brayden Clark running a distant second at 1:02.03.


The North Polk boys also placed second in both the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays. Sommers, Summers and Jacob Wilcox each added an individual silver medal.


Sears, Summers, Croat and Clark Hood completed the boys’ sprint medley in 1:40.78. North Polk just missed a gold medal in the event as Madrid’s winning time was 1:40.61.


In the shuttle hurdle Sommers joined up with Purmon Greene, Dawson Murray and Colten Parkins to finish in 1:07.29. Norwalk took first in 1:06.79.


Sommers ran a time of 16 seconds flat in the 110 highs to come in behind the :14.97 by Madrid’s Michael Santi. Summers finished the 200 in :23.22 to also come in behind Santi, who clocked in at :22.23.


Wilcox ran a 10:41.27 in the 3,200 to trail only the 10:30.86 by Madrid’s Sean McDermott. Wilcox also placed third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:48.94.


Michael Williams gave the North Polk boys an individual bronze in the long jump with a jump of 18-2. The Comet boys’ 4 X 200 team of Sears, Williams, Quinton McCarthur and Summers also placed third with a 1:36.92 showing.
