BAXTER - North Polk and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter combined for 16 top-three finishes in the girls’ competition at the Heart of Iowa Conference track meet May 2 in Baxter.

North Polk won four events and scored 114.5 points to place second and CMB picked up one gold and silver medal apiece, placing third with 107 points. Gilbert won the nine-team competition with 152.5 points.

Maria Gorham picked up two gold medals and one silver individually for North Polk. She also anchored the Comet girls to a victory in the sprint medley relay.

Gorham won both the 200-meter dash and the open 400.

In the 200, Gorham ran a time of 26.72 seconds — beating out the :27.06 run by Greene County’s Olivia Hansen. Gorham and teammate Amelia Lesher were the first two individuals to cross the finish line in the 400 with respective times of 1:00.42 and 1:03.14.

Esther Ross, Mahliah Ingersoll and Eva Schoenberg joined Gorham in winning the sprint medley in 1:56.27. Greene County placed second in 1:58.20.

The girls’ high jump at the HOIC meet came down to a big showdown between Gorham and Greene County’s Megan Durbin.

Gorham won the girls’ high jump and Durbin placed second at the Drake Relays the previous week. Last season at state, Durbin claimed the Class 3A championship and Gorham came in third.

At the HOIC meet, Gorham turned in the second-best jump of her career at 5 feet, six inches. But Durbin prevailed with an outstanding jump of 5-7.

Lesher added an individual win the 3,000 for North Polk with a time of 11:06.43. She also took second in the 1,500 at 5:15.47.

North Polk added a bronze medal in the 4 X 800. Sierra Lambert, Grace Croat, Kennedy Wendel and Sophie Blanchard teamed to run a time of 10:31.01.

Sailor Hinegardner provided the gold medal for CMB in the 100 hurdles. She also took second in the long jump and anchored the Raiders to a third-place finish in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Hinegardner’s winning time in the 100 hurdles was :16.58. That was just fast enough to beat out the :16.61 by Saydel’s Jayda Tolentino for first.

In the long jump, Hinegardner jumped 15-7 and teammate Megan Ritter peaked at 15-5 to place third. Gilbert’s Lydia Berns-Schweingruber won with a jump of 16-1.5.
