GeVerna Maxine Lee Sykes, 88, of Chicago. Illinois, originally of Cambridge, Iowa, passed away on September 16, 2013, at Manor Care West Nursing Home, Oak Lawn, Illinois.

GeVerna was born in Bouton, Iowa on December 2, 1924, daughter of George Lee and Sophia (Cross) Lee. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942 and later moved to Chicago. After moving to Chicago, she held various jobs, primarily secretarial in nature. She especially enjoyed working for the Prairie Farmer news publications, real estate appraisal and mortgage companies. She retired from Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) in 1987. After retirement, GeVerna became interested in gardening and genealogy research of both sides of her family. This led her to connect with numerous near and distant relatives and to the discovery of many centuries of ancestors, some of historic significance.

GeVerna was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Don Sykes, Jr. in 2012. Surviving GeVerna are 1 son, William (Peggy) Lindenthaler of Prescott Valley, Arizona, 2 daughters, Roberta Lindenthaler of Danvers, Illinois and Emily Jean Barry of Chicago, Illinois; two grandchildren, Gregory (Rocio Rivadeneyra) Braswell of Bloomington, Illinois and Melissa (Brian) Troyan of Chicago, Illinois; 4 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Lee of Kilauea, Hawaii and Fred (Mary) Lee of Glendale, Arizona; 2 nephews and 1 niece.

A memorial service for GeVerna was held on September 28, 2013 at Donnellan Funeral Home in Chicago, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Diabetes Association.
