Join Story County Conservation’s Fun Loving Outdoor Adventure Team nature camp on a backpacking adventure to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer.

The F.L.O.A.T. V backpacking trip will take place July 31–Aug. 6 and will be led by SCC Naturalists Heather Hucka and Emily Herring. Youth in grades nine through 12 during the 2013-2014 school year are eligible to apply.

On this seven-day trip, each youth’s mind, body and spirit will be challenged. "The feeling of carrying everything you need to survive is empowering, and being surrounded by wilderness helps to give a new perspective on life," Herring said.

The cost of the trip is $350, and scholarships are available! SCC will provide backpacks, tents, water purifiers, stoves and food. Participants will be responsible for meals on the road, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, water bottles and clothing. Participants are also expected to attend a training day on June 25, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Participants must submit an application and pay the trip fee by 4 p.m. on May 30. Make it a summer to remember, apply today!

More information and an application for F.L.O.A.T. V Backpacking Trip can be found by visiting For more information about this outdoor experience, contact Heather Hucka at

SCC will only be able to accommodate 10 participants, so not all youth who apply will be accepted. Payments from selected applicants are non-refundable. Scholarships are available through the Iowa Association of Naturalists. Once participants are selected, they will receive a more detailed list of supplies they are expected to bring for the backpacking trip.
