Story County Conservation invites the public to the monthly O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) program at the Story County Conservation Center at McFarland Park (56461 180th St.), northeast of Ames. "Loon Magic" will be presented on Tuesday, Jan. 7, beginning at 11 a.m.
Join photographer Ty Smedes for a slide presentation and lecture about the loon — an icon of the north country. Smedes has made many trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota, where he has captured images of loons. Come learn about this iconic bird and see some of Smedes’ stunning photos.
O.W.L.S. programs are designed for "boomers" or older – but anyone can attend. An optional luncheon follows the program at noon. Lunch is catered for a $7 fee, and registration is required for lunch by 3:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 3. The planned lunch menu for January is homemade chicken noodle soup, ham sandwiches and mini cinnamon rolls.
