Five fire departments responded to a house fire north of Kelley Monday night.

The fire occurred at approximately 5 p.m. The Kelley Fire Department was initially called to battle the blaze, but soon requested assistance from the Cambridge, Gilbert, Huxley and Slater departments.

Shane Lovig, Huxley firefighter and EMT, said firefighters also had to put out fires that had started in a nearby ditch and field as a result of burning embers carried by the wind from the house.

With temperatures reaching 100 degrees, firefighters had the challenge of trying to stay hydrated and cool while battling the blaze. Lovig said they also had challenges with getting water to the site, which is a typical problem with rural fires.

Kelley Fire Chief Kenneth Kling could not be reached for comment by press time.
