The body of a Des Moines man was found Thursday, May 9, in a field southeast of Maxwell.
A call was received by Polk County Sheriff’s Communications Center about 1:20 p.m., reporting that the body of an adult male had been found in a farm field near the intersection of NE 166th Avenue and NE 120th Street, southeast of Maxwell. The caller described himself as a friend of the man’s. The Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified him as Barton Wayne Tingley, age 49, of Des Moines.
Because the body was found just south of the Story-Polk county line, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jana Abens said the county line runs along 166th Avenue and the body was found about a quarter mile from the intersection in the middle of a farm field near a tree line, Abens said.
"It is a little strange as far as that location," Abens said.
There was no noticeable cause of death when the body was found, and the caller told authorities he had last seen Tingley on Wednesday, Abens said. An autopsy was scheduled for last Friday.
Abens said investigators had not been able to verify when Tingley was last seen, or reports by the caller that Tingley had friends or family in the area.
