A Collins man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities say he shot two cats and threw them in a trash bin.
Kevin Cameron Golly, 28, 428 Second St., was arrested by the Story County Sheriff’s Office about 1 a.m. Nov. 11. Golly, who is also charged with domestic assault with intent or weapon, made his initial court appearance in Story County District Court in Nevada on Nov. 12.
Sheriff’s Capt. Barry Thomas said Golly had an argument with the woman he lives with after one of their two cats defecated on her bed.
According to Thomas, the woman was upset and argued with Golly about the cat.
"He reportedly assaulted her by grabbing her hair and choking her," Thomas said.
Thomas said after the fight, Golly shot the two cats and threw them in a trash bin.
Thomas said it appeared Golly shot both cats because he didn’t know which one had defecated on the bed.
Thomas did not know how many shots Golly fired, but said, "I don’t have anything to lead me to believe he did anything but shoot at the animals."
The woman had "scratches and bruises" after the incident, Thomas said.
Golly is being held on $15,000 bond in the Story County jail. A preliminary hearing is set for Friday, Nov. 22.
