Two Elkhart men were involved in a one-vehicle accident that occurred early Sunday morning in Ankeny.

The accident was reported at 2:38 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, along the 7900 block of N.E. 29th St., just north of S.E. Oralabor Road, said Sgt. Brent Long of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Chad Leto, 30, of Elkhart, died at the scene. Randy Parker, 34, also of Elkhart, was taken by Life Flight to a local hospital. He was listed in serious, but stable condition as of Sunday. Long said neither men appeared to have been wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The results of the autopsy performed on Leto were still pending as of Tuesday morning due to the toxicology reports that need to be finalized. Long said it may be a while before the results are released.

At the time of the accident, the men were traveling in a full-sized truck, but Long was unsure of the make and model. The truck traveled through the ditch on the west side of the road and ended up in the stream below the bridge on the west side. It appears the truck rolled over at least once, Long said.

While the accident is still under investigation, Long guessed speed was a contributing factor.

Authorities from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Ankeny Police Department, Ankeny Fire Department and Life Flight responded to the accident.
