An autopsy will be performed today to identify the person and determine cause of death.
Local and state authorities are investigating a decomposed body found Friday morning in the basement of a South Hill residence.
Burlington officers were dispatched about 8:15 a.m. to 704 Central Ave. after they received a telephone call indicating there was a dead person inside the residence.
Police and emergency medical teams responded to the one-story home, but it was obvious from the person's appearance and the odor inside the residence that they had been dead for some time.
Lt. Greg Allen, commander of Burlington's criminal investigations division, said an autopsy will be performed today to identify the person and determine manner and cause of death. The deceased person's name will not be released until notification of family is completed.
Allen said when officers were dispatched to the residence they found a "partially decomposed body" there.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is assisting Burlington police in the investigation.
Allen said the investigation is ongoing and additional details will be released at the appropriate time.
