The 3C’s in Huxley was on Santa’s nice list this year, getting a sleigh full of brand new fitness equipment, just in time for those New Year’s resolutions to stay healthy and fit in 2018.
Travis Bakken, director of the Huxley Parks and Rec and the 3C’s (Citizens’ Community Center), said plans have been in the works for much of the year to replace the bulk of the outdated and worn equipment, and that it’s no coincidence it arrived just in time for the New Year.
“We wanted to stay competitive with fitness locations in Ankeny and Ames, and we felt this new equipment would set us apart and get people excited for the New Year,” said Bakken. “The equipment we are replacing was old and expensive to repair. There were a lot of rusty parts and welds that were breaking.”
There are a total of 14 new pieces of equipment for patrons to utilize. Twelve are new weight machines that replaced existing units, most of which had been in place since 2003 when the facility first opened. Heather Denger, lead fitness instructor and administrative assistant, is most excited for two new pieces of equipment that the 3C’s has never had before: The Concept 2 Rowing Machine and the Matrix Climb Mill. “We’ll use these for a lot of our fitness classes,” said Denger. “The climb mill is cardio equipment that features a three-tier escalator and has Netflix, Hulu and Facebook apps on it. You can stream music and watch movies while you work out.”
The equipment purchase was approved by the Huxley City Council in November and was funded by excess revenue created by the Parks and Rec department in the last year through membership and programming. “We wanted to use the excess revenue to put back into facility upgrades,” said Bakken. The equipment was purchased from 2nd Wind Exercise Equipment for a total of $33,162.75, which included installation and warranty. The equipment was delivered and installed Dec. 27 and 28.
Bakken and Denger hope the new equipment will spark another uptick in membership. They are running a New Members Special during the month of January, offering a 13th month free for every new member who signs up for a year membership at the 3C’s. The 3C’s offers a variety of membership options for students, singles, couples, families and senior citizens, as well as a variety of fitness classes throughout the year. Winter hours are 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday.
