The new fire station in Collins has received another sizeable donation toward its completion.

On Dec. 7, Exchange State Bank representatives, Chad Elkin and Joan Enfield, presented Greg Schlueter of the city, and fire department representatives Darren Kennedy and David Botterbrodt with a check for $10,000.

“We want to support the project and have the money be used toward completion of the fire station,” said Elkin of the charitable gift.

The check will go into the Collins Fire and Rescue fund for the new station, which is still considered to be “a work in progress” on the south end of Main Street. The studs are ready for the walls that will eventually encase an office room and a training room at the north end of the building. Schlueter said along with that, the community still hopes to get a concrete approach completed in front of the fire station. At present, the approach is gravel.

The Collins volunteer Fire and Rescue Department serves the southeast corner of Story County and also covers a little area in Jasper County.

The exterior of the building was completed last spring.
