A familiar face is the new director of the Acute Care Unit at Story Medical. Shanda Ring, RN, assumed leadership duties in August. Ring has served in a number of roles in her 3 ½ years at Story Medical, including working as a floor nurse, a charge nurse and an ER nurse.
“One of the things I love about nursing at Story Medical is that there is the opportunity to do many different things within the nursing field,” says Ring, who is looking forward to continuing to grow in her new position.
“I’m excited this opportunity will allow me to further build my leadership skills,” she says. “I have always considered myself a leader and this is my chance to show it.”
As director of Acute Care, Ring will manage the day-to-day duties of the inpatient unit at Story Medical’s South Campus. She says her experience will help her to make a difference for staff and patients.
“This is a great opportunity to raise the bar,” Ring says. “We offer great care at Story Medical, but we can still improve. I want us to continue to move forward in every aspect. We have the potential to be extraordinary.”
Ring says she is committed to addressing areas where processes can be improved. She enjoys looking at how things are currently done and working with the care team to implement strategies to take them to the next level. She says all of it plays into improving the quality of care for each person who walks through the doors.
“Patients and their families can choose where to get their medical care and in this area, there are a lot of choices,” Ring says. “We look at each patient as an individual, but also as a mother, father, sister, brother or child. We want to care for them like we would a member of our own family. Our nurses play a huge role in the patient experience and we want it to be a positive one for every patient, every time.”
Ring and husband, Joe, have three children between 19 and 24 years old. In her free time, Ring is a volunteer preschool teacher at Heartland Baptist Church, works annually at a camp for special needs campers and loves to read, fish and spend time outdoors.
