Alleman Mayor Carmela Jones was glad to have around 30 neighbors from the community join the fun of the first Alleman Movie Night, held this past Saturday.

Movie Night was the idea of Alleman Park and Rec Chairperson Shari Buehler. “I remember my dad telling me stories of how the city showed movies on the side of the Co-op when he was a kid. Back then, the Alleman Lumber Yard supplied two by fours sitting on cinder blocks for seating,” Buehler said.

In bringing back this great tradition, Alleman Park and Rec chose the movie “Gnomeo and Juliet,” to be shown on the big white elevator in the heart of town.

Alleman resident Sue Stevens said her grandchildren, Henry and Sofia, loved the movie, which is a favorite of many children and still entertaining for adults. Stevens said she hopes the event becomes a tradition again in Alleman, and she suggested that the city have two movie nights a year.

City Councilman Dave Wilcox was happy with the turnout for Alleman Movie Night. He and his wife, Linda, helped with the setup of the movie and then sat down in their lawn chairs with snacks they brought to enjoy it. Linda said she was happy Alleman could bring back a long-lost tradition.

The next big event offered for Alleman residents is the Alleman Community Picnic on Saturday, July 22, in the Alleman Estates, from 5-8 p.m. Residents are asked to bring a drink and a side dish to share.
