The Slater Fire Department celebrated its annual Firemen’s Day event Saturday, with a variety of activities at Nelson Park in town.

Firefighter Doug Nelson said the celebration dates back to the 1930s or ’40s era, when it was held at the town’s Legion Hall. Later it was moved to the fire station. Three years ago, Nelson said, firefighters decided to move it to the park to have more kids’ activities.

The park is a special setting for the Nelson family, because one of the family’s descendents donated the park land to the town.

Nelson, a 26-year member of the department, also mentioned that he is the son of Dan Nelson, who will soon celebrate 50 years with the department. Not only is Dan the senior member of the department, but it’s likely, according to another firefighter, that he is the longest serving firefighter ever in Slater.
