Join us in celebrating Memorial Day in a peaceful country setting at Ashton Chapel, located in front of Ashton Wildwood Park in northwest Jasper County. The church services will begin on Monday, May 29, at 9 a.m., with cemetery services after 9:30. Guest speaker this year will be Wayne Marek, a veterans readjustment counselor out of Des Moines. We are bringing attention to Memorial Day as seen through the eyes of a veteran. Many of us do not realize that Memorial Day may be especially troubling to veterans because of their own potent memories of soldiers lost.

He will be talking about the difficult subject of “Homecomings” and what family members often find is the most difficult time of all. He will also be giving a message of hope and stressing the alternatives that are free to help families weather these tough transitions back to civilian life.

Our country church has had this Memorial Day service for almost 125 years and the format is steeped in tradition, with children putting flowers on the graves of the veterans after a 30-minute service and the Legion gives their 21-gun salute over the unnamed soldier’s grave. This year we will have “Taps” sung by an opera graduate of Simpson, which is sure to end this moving tribute to veterans, living and dead, on a high note!

The Ashton Chapel and Cemetery are located in the northwest corner of Jasper County, just north of Mingo at 8887 West 122nd St. North. Everyone is welcome to join us.
