Park and Rec Representative and Master Gardner Arlene Sampson said approximately 50 families came to Alleman City Hall for free trees donated by the Iowa DNR for the Trees for Kids Program last Saturday. Many families took several trees home to plant in their yards. Sampson told the residents the benefits of planting flowering shrubs — butterflies, bees and birds — and that two of the bushes also produce berries, which robins enjoy. The DNR donated 200 trees to Alleman. Sampson chose the pollinator series offered by the DNR — serviceberry, chokecherry, button bush and arrowwood, all flowering bushes in the spring. The shrubs also will have enjoyable red and yellow fall foliage, too. Photo Contributed
