North Polk Community School District is pleased to announce that Cynthia Phillips has been hired to serve as the next principal of North Polk High School. She will begin her duties July 1, replacing the current principal, Derrick Joel, who recently accepted a superintendent position in Nebraska.

Mrs. Phillips was identified as the successful candidate out of a pool of 33 qualified candidates. Grundmeyer Leader Search LLC was hired to assist in the process of hiring a suitable replacement. All applicants were objectively screened and multiple initial interviews were conducted. Two finalists were then invited to the district for formal interviews with key district stakeholders, including students, staff, and community members. Feedback from the formal interviews was used to advise the school board’s decision to offer Cynthia the position.

Mrs. Phillips currently serves as the high school principal at AHSTW Community School District in Avoca. She has been the building leader since 2013. As principal, Cynthia has served as the activities director (2013-15), oversaw a $6 million building addition, led professional development for her teaching staff and expanded various student opportunities. Prior to her tenure at AHSTW, Cynthia served as a teacher and coach at Denison High School in Denison for 14 years. She has also taught as an adjunct instructor at Morningside College in Sioux City, as well as several Area Education Agency classes. She has been involved in multiple community projects and committees. Cynthia has earned two master’s degrees and is currently taking classes at Drake University in the Specialist Program.

Cynthia has four children, three of whom are in college, and the youngest will be entering seventh grade at North Polk this fall. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with family and spending time outdoors. Mrs. Phillips is excited to be named the new principal and feels the position will be a great fit for her personally and professionally. She said, “I am honored to be selected for this position. North Polk CSD is an impressive school district with great communities, resources and people. I genuinely look forward to serving the students, staff and families of North Polk CSD as we continue to build the best educational experience for our children.” Please join us in welcoming Cynthia and her family to North Polk.
